David believes that they may sacrifice a large part of the population, "No, you’re right. I know it. But it’s just a reference to the effect of the Toba Catastrophe in the past—how it changed humanity. That’s their goal: to create another population bottleneck and force a Second Great Leap Forward. They want to bring about the next stage of evolution” (Riddle 90). This conflict causes David to sacrifice his position in Jakarta station to fight the Immari. The central conflict is the problems in Julie’s time. Julie Gerchak is the protagonist of this novel. Julie was trying to better the world. Alan Lomax and the close to impossible problems in the world were the antagonists. A somewhat regular topic was a Person vs. Person literary conflict, Alan Lomax vs. Julie Gerchak. “The dork wasn’t afraid.” (page 11) although this happened long ago in the novel Julie carried out her hatred for Alan Lomax throughout the her experience with Ishmael. Watching Julie grow more mature and understandable throughout the book was really quite amazing. Near the end of the novel Julie was more open minded and more intellectual than how she first started out at the…

Bullies and Victims play vital roles in both the novel and the play. The authors, Golding and Kelly, both put their characters through similar trials. In Lord of the Flies, Golding’s characters turn from normal school boys, to savages who are prepared to kill one another to gain power. Golding suggests that under certain circumstances, people will naturally begin to become more violent and savage. In DNA the characters are thrust into a world of secrecy where they have to cover things up to save themselves, Kelly himself wrote this; ‘I don’t think I write characters who are bad, I think I write characters who are trying to do the right thing, but are failing’. Kelly gives no description to the lives of his characters before the death of Adam, suggesting that they may have lead innocent lives, but they have been thrust into a world of violence that spirals out of control.…

A conflict that is faced by the father is the struggle to hold on to his humanity in a world where only few remains and the world feels like nothingness. The father, who is trying to ensure the safety and well-being of his son, is forced to do many immoral things, but even in a destroyed society where morals are never heard of, can still survive and flourish through the person. It can be first seen when McCarthy says, “The snow lay deep and gray. Already there was a fresh fall of ash on it. He struggled on a few more feet and then turned and looked back. The boy had fallen, He dropped the armload of blankets and the tarp and went back and picked him up. He was already shivering. He picked him up and held him. I’m sorry, he said. I’m sorry”(McCarthy 99). The father is already giving up on living in such a wretched world, but for the love of his son he must endure, struggle and solicitude for his son. Reveals that through the harsh world that is faced upon the father and the boy, they can still survive in hope of a propitious future. Another conflict that is shown in the book is between the savage cannibal and thieves that are against the father and son., it is stated that, “They’re going to kill those people, aren’t they? Yes. Why do they have to do that? I don’t know. Are they going to eat them? I don’t know. They’re going to eat them, aren’t they? Yes. And we couldn’t help them because then they’d eat us too. Yes. And that’s why we couldn’t help them. Yes. Okay” (McCarthy 127). Having to live in a world full of miscreant savages; the father and boy find a place where they believe to have food and supplies for their journey, but instead found themselves with near-death people. The standards of these abhorrent people that are left in the society is unbelievably low, considering that they will devour anything in their presence. This quote…

In Children of the Mind by Orson Scott Card, Card uses a variety of craft moves to demonstrate the theme of sacrifice. Sacrifice is clearly the theme because the author contemplates whether sentient alien life has as much worth as human. Another aspect of style the author uses to convey the dangers of believing political ideas are more important than individuals is the way he uses the mood of indoctrination through religious language. An example of when indoctrination occurs is when David starts realising that the writing on the wall will affect his life. An example of this writing is "The Norm is he will of God, and reproduction is the only holy production and the devil is the father of…
