Feudalism: The Great Chain Of Being
The church played a major role in supporting feudalism, especially when it came to the Great Chain of Being. The Great Chain of Being held a lot of power over people in the manor. The Great Chain of Being states that there is relative proportion of spirit to an object or anything at all (Melani). Meaning one matter may hold more spirituality than another. People on the manor strongly believed that God supported The Great Chain of Being, they thought he chose their parts in it (Lenehan 2). Which gave them a lot of reason to do their job. Since God chose this for them they believed this is what they had to do. They believed that was their purpose in life. The Great Chain of Being backed feudalism using religion and beliefs.     People lived their entire lives according to the church. The church played a huge role in education and daily life (Hinds 14). All Medieval christians marked important stages of life with the sacraments of the church (Hinds 14). After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was a mess (Richardson).They could not defend themselves and there was no trade (Richardson). The church was the only institution to survive the fall of Rome (Richardson). Because of this, most people turned to religion and the church for hope (Richardson). The church was the only organized institution in Europe so they tried to instill order on everybody else.
