Early civilizations often had many similarities in their politics, economies, and social norms. The civilizations of Mesopotamia, or the Fertile Crescent (3000 BCE), and the Nile River Valley (3000 BCE) are prime examples of this, but with different geography, leaders, and resources many differences divided the two nations. Both the Nile River Valley and the Fertile Crescent had authoritarian governments and mainly agricultural economies, but the Nile River Valley was much more unified, while Mesopotamia’s city-states were constantly battling. The Earth is filled with many different environments, but only a few are suitable for the domestication of crops. Throughout the first few chapters, Diamond emphasizes the importance of crops being domesticated in certain areas. The nation's that learned to domesticate crops first became more prosperous. A good example of this is the Fertile Crescent. The reason the Fertile Crescent got such a head start on developing a civilization was because they were quickly able to domesticate crops. Some civilization's, like the Maori people, could not prosper because they did not have the correct environment to do so. The book explains, "Maori tropical crops could not grow in the…

Before I read the book I thought that New Guinea advanced at the same rate as Europe and other Middle Eastern countries. I did not realize that they had such basic ways of living when other people were more sophisticated than ever. His question brings up a very good point. Why did the white people have so much cargo and they had so little? I think the answer is the New Guineans had their ways of living that worked for them and they didn't need to be changed. The white people had to change their ways of living to fit their environments and also had to deal with the threat of other countries. New Guinea was a secluded island that traded very little so they had nobody to war with. This was very beneficial as they could focus on getting food and governing their…
