INFORMATIVE SPEECH
“Fandoms”
Good morning everyone! So one thing that I am obsessed about at the moment is fan culture or commonly known as fandoms− especially the ones that are on the internet. What I like to talk about today is the idea that you can like something so much that it actually destroys your life. Let me explain.
Firstly, the person discovers and enjoys the thing then the person goes on to the internet and has fun finding more about it and people who feel the same way and then the person then becomes aware of their overwhelming perfection and becomes the main reason for being alive. Now whenever anything happens they are overcome by so many emotions that they can’t function and it’s basically destroyed their life. But what is it that turns you from a person who just likes something into an emotional wreck? It’s the internet.
So you watched something that made you feel some “feelings”, if you then go on to the internet and see tons of other people feeling the same “feelings”, it’s a feeling explosion! It’s basically like a soap opera around a group with ups and downs, fights and drama that at the end of the day is all centered around a mutual obsession over something or someone. Isn’t that beautiful?
But the separation between this level of a hardcore internet fandom and then just the casual real life fan is what amazes me. A casual fan would pretty much just enjoy the thing whilst the internet fan would be rocking back and forth in the corner because of all the feelings. Basically, fandoms are like drugs, you just that little bit to get you hooked and then a tiny bit more, here and there and BAM! Suddenly, your life is a disaster.
I think it’s great how our generation accepts so much as totally normal though like if a friend or a parent find something really strange that we probably would not even question. But then again, my innocence has been completely soiled by the internet I have seen many things that I will probably never unsee.

Regardless of the terminology used to categorize the fans, there are typically these types of fans. The “casual fans” are similar to what many people consider fair weather fans. They like a sports team and follow them but are not as dedicated to it as the other two types of fans. I would place myself in the category of a casual fan for most sports teams. I work full time, study full time, and have a newborn in my home. I have not followed any sport team for quite some time because of these responsibilities. I on occasion will be given free tickets to see a sporting event and will usually take the opportunity to go to it. However, I rarely seek to purchase a ticket or focus effort to watch a game on…

Obsession is common when it comes to dealing with technology and new fads that everyone is interested in. Obsession can be described as something that makes you yearning for more. In author Meghan Daum’s article, obesession is the most prevalent topic. The author was in a cyber world that she could never get enough of. This is because she met a man who admired her, and pursued her more than she ever expected anyone would. This caused her to build an obsession with not only him, but the technology used as well; because through most of the article that was…

They have an ability to be who they want to be and to place a façade over who they really are. Throughout the years, there has also been an increase in hedonism, the doctrine that happiness is the highest good. Today’s teenagers and young adults have taken on the ideal “If it feels good, do it.” Statistics show that there is an increase in the usage of drugs and alcohol at a younger age as well. But, because of this rise in hedonism, less are thinking about their futures and even what might happen to their bodies if they continue to believe and act upon this. Today’s society receives joy and pleasure over a picture getting liked, reblogged or shared with others. This leads them to do more and more outrageous things for the sole reason of getting liked on the Internet. But, the life that today’s peoples have created for themselves on the Internet is just the good side of themselves, and the happiness that they receive from getting those likes is fake; if they are not their true selves on the Internet, then the happiness they receive cannot be true happiness. For example, in the novel Fahrenheit 451, Mildred has taken the façade that she would have used over the Internet and applied it to her everyday life, therefore she is never her true self and always shows her perfect side to others, no matter what. This is shown after she tries to overdose on sleeping…

Child abuse is an awful and unfortunate ongoing occurrence that happens every where in the world and it is something difficult to completely stop. It is hard to stop because it may not be noticeable at first look but if you can look into the situation more you can find out clues that in may be occurring. It is also a touchy subject because accusing a parent or guardian of child abuse is very difficult to do in the event that you are wrong. Although you are looking out for the best interest of the child it is insulting in the event that you are wrong. It is nearly impossible to because the example used in the book Geek Love. In the review by Matthew Giunti in The Christian Century he states that “Al experiments with hallucinogenic drugs and, later, radioisotopes during Lil are various pregnancies.” This is an example of how child abuse is very difficult to control.…

Sometimes you cannot fathom the addiction but its there. When you have an addiction to drugs or alcohol the addiction isn’t necessarily to the substance but how the drugs or alcohol make you feel during or after. The addiction can serve as a relaxant, anti stress medication or even a rush feel and because it gives you that relaxed feel or rush you want to do it again and again until the need for it evolves into an addiction. The same is with entertainment or technology. For example, you come home melancholy from a long hard day at school and want to unwind from the days stress.…

    Hidden Intellectualism

This changing media is discussed within the paper Copy and Paste Literacy. In it, the author, Dan Perkel proposes that, “deviating from de Certeau, Jenkins reveals how various fan groups produce tangible artifacts, such as fan fiction and “transform the experience of media consumption into the production of new texts, indeed of a new culture and new community.”...Ito (forthcoming) builds on these arguments and debate concerning active and passive media audiences and argues that “new convergent media…require a reconfigured conceptual apparatus that takes productive and creative activity at the ‘consumer’ level as a given rather than as an addendum or an exception”” (Perkel 11). A new, evolved, type of media is being examined, an example of which is fan-fiction. There are works, in the form of stories and movies, that different people become fans of. They then create new stories called fan-fiction that are based off of or come from ideas they received when viewing the original work. In this way, media is becoming more participation based instead of consumption based. The general public isn’t just consuming media, they are participating in and creating it, hence the label “new”…

As one dedicates all of their efforts to watching a nine season series, one often experiences an emotional attachment to characters and their lives. Many binge-watchers will begin to imagine the characters as someone in their own personal life, allowing the emotions to mentally and physically affect them. Many will feel that if a character passes away on the show, a family member of their own had also deceased. Many will cry tears of joy at the highest points of a fictional character’s life, and many will openly question the decisions that a specific character chooses to make outloud. In addition to attachment, one will begin to feel the urges of withdrawal. Being away from the search bar for an extended period of time will leave one constantly anticipating the safe arrival back to their dark room with a computer screen waiting to be used. Withdrawal will cause one to constantly think of nothing but what they are going to watch next and impatiently waiting to return to their “veg session.” Many Netflix users will also begin to plan their entire day around their binge-watch session to ensure they are getting the most out of the their monthly subscription. Lastly, a binger will often feel a roller coaster of emotions at least once during a period of binge-watching. While watching a series, one will feel pleasure mentally, but when the series ends, one will feel sad or sometimes even depressed. The highs and lows of each emotions relies directly on the amount of time spent watching the series and the level of attachment one felt towards the…

It’s not normal for a person dressed up in a hospital gown and funny looking socks to be looking at medicine in the middle of Wal-Mart. By the way that people responded to my social norm breach, I’ve concluded that people thought it was weird and that it was definitely an odd thing for them to have seen in a popular store. I also think that people don’t know how to react in a different situation that they have never experienced before. I think this, because most of them would just stare at me clueless and stay silent. I also believe that social media plays a major role in social norms. Social media takes on its own voice in every aspect of life. If someone is breaking the social norm, they are automatically strange people and can be targeted for it. If I would’ve experienced the same thing that the people in Wal-Mart did, I wouldn’t have known what to do, only because I’ve never seen it…

Dear friends and students of UTA, I humbly come to you with a simple argument, one that is close to my heart. Though it may sound trivial, the argument has been raging on for three decades, and has grown to a nation wide debate. The question: is there such thing as a gaming community? Again, the question may sound inconsequential, but consider this fellow Mavericks, what makes a community? Is it just a group of people meeting and having a good time? Or is it more? Is something like gaming able to unite people from all across the world? Admittedly, the argument is rather close to my heart. I have been interested games since the age of five. I remember my uncle playing Starcraft fourteen years ago, and being transfixed by cutting edge graphics. It is a culture that existed before I was born, and continues to expand. Within the past few years, it has burst into the main stream of entertainment, competing with the likes of cinema and TV. How can a group of people who have never met, form such a complex society? How can a hobby inspire people around the world to this level of fanaticism? The gaming society can shine some light on societies and how they function as a whole.…
