Lastly, I would also like to thank my fellow friends whom helped me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time frame.

We students taking Additional Mathematics are required to carry out a project work while we are in Form 5.This year the Curriculum Development Division, Ministry of Education has prepared tasks for us .We are to choose and complete only ONE task based on our area of interest..Upon completion of the Additional Mathematics Project Work ,we are to gain valuable experiences and able to:

* Apply and adapt a variety of problem solving strategies to solve routine and non-routine problems.

* Experience classroom environments which are challenging, interesting and meaningful and hence improve their thinking skills.

* Experience classroom environments where knowledge and skills are applied in meaningful ways in solving real-life problems.

* Experience classroom environments where expressing ones mathematical thinking, reasoning and communication are highly encouraged and expected.

* Experience class room environments that stimulates and enhances effective learning.

* Acquire effective mathematical communication through oral and writing ,and to use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas correctly and precisely.

Children need adults around them that understand that numeracy is not solely related to numbers and calculations. Mathematical concepts occur in play-based environments, which allow children to problem solve daily with the help of a MKO. For example, a child playing with sand can learn mathematical concepts by putting scoops of sands into containers and the adult asking the child questions, such as, which is heavier or lighter or will that container fit into that container. Play allows for many mathematical concepts through exploring shapes, patterns, relationship between objects and going fast or slow during outdoor play. Tina Bruce recommends that conversations with children and adults enhance critical thinking, logic and are part of becoming competent in mathematics (Bruce et al., 2011,…

According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, classroom discourse, the “purposeful exchange of ideas through classroom discussion, as well as through other forms of verbal, visual, and written communications” (NCTM, 2014, p. 29), is a core practice of effective, high quality mathematics instruction. While it is a teacher’s responsibility to create a learning environment that encourages productive or meaningful discourse, that is discourse that promotes mathematical understanding (Anthony & Walshaw, 2009), it has been suggested that teachers need to be provided with formal opportunities or experiences to develop the knowledge needed to facilitate discourse (Speer & Wagner, 2009). These opportunities could be provided through professional development.…
