Fahrenheit 451 Summary Notes #1

• Guy made various discoveries during the first part of the story. He met this women named Clarisse McClellan. He discovered a couple of things about her which included the fact that she was "17 and crazy" or so that is what was said in the book so far. Before Clarisse left to her house she asked Guy if he was happy. A little later after stepping in his own home, he discovered he was not. After having a chat with Captain Beatty, he realizes what his job is and decides he won't do it anymore. • I noticed a couple symbols in part one. One of them, obviously, is the fire or the temperature 451. The fire is meant to represent the burning books which are what destroy the freedom of thought. Another is books, those are what symbolize hope and knowledge. The hound could also be a symbol as it represents the evil in their world. In detail how they care so little about what life is anymore, in consideration to the fights they established where the hound fought animals for their own personal enjoyment. • So far we've met: Guy Montag, His wife Mildred Montag, Clarisse McClellan, Captain Beatty, and the Mechanical Hound. Guy Montag is the man the story follows, he is an unhappy 30 year old man who has been a fireman for ten years. Mildred seems very vacant and is obsessed with her television shows, which for the record, I feel are helping her avoid the pain of her emptiness or sadness. Clarisse McClellan is a very interesting character because of the way she thinks. She has her own ideas and are very different from anyone else's. Clarisse helps Montag realize his unhappiness in life and introduces him to some of her unique thoughts. Captain Beatty is the antagonist. He is pretty smart for a man who dislikes the existence of books if you ask me. During the story, it seems as if he can tell what Guy is thinking, maybe that is contributing to something I just can't seem to agree with myself on what it is.
