Reflective Essay
My writing is nowhere near what I would consider good. I am the only one to blame. As I previously stated in other class assignments, I dropped out of high school in the middle of ninth grade. Ever since then, I never did any sort of writing, unless it was for work. Instead of working on my writing and education in general these past 6 years, I have been ignoring the fact that being educated will get me further in life and help me live more comfortably. What pushed me get back into school was the birth of my daughter as well as my interest in becoming a police officer. Aside from my horrible credit history, I knew from the start that my writing needs improvement if I even want to get through the screening process for new hires. In class, I realized how much there is to writing certain texts. Specially with essays, there was terms mentioned that I was not thought with or I just simply forgot about them. Learning grammar was of great help to me as I see grammar as my biggest weakness when it comes to writing. I specifically remember the presentation about proper usage on the apostrophe, because I was guilty on using it incorrectly with plural nouns. What I would have liked, however, is that grammar should have been taught not by the students, but by the professor. Some of the presentations seemed very important and essential to writing but they were not all clear to understand. Others had good information but it was hard for me to keep interest as the speaker read line after line of text of what seemed to be copy and paste definitions. Aside from that minor flaw, I thought the class was good overall. I just wish I had more free time so I can take

another class that supersedes this one. If I get thru the hiring process, I will have to be a good writer as police officers have to generate many accurate reports throughout their work day. Since incorrect grammar can

Robert B. Parker’s protagonist, Spenser, was a cop ahead of his time. Articulate, well-spoken, and well-read, Spenser had a college degree. He often quoted famous literary figures including his namesake, Edmund Spenser (“with an S like the poet”), author of the epic poem, The Faerie Queene. Today, more and more police agencies require at least some post-secondary education to qualify for a job on the force. The reason is simple: cable TV and Hollywood stereotypes aside today’s cops need solid, reliable writing skills. Yes, you read that right. Cops know how to write more than tickets. Here are seven strategies you can use to become a better writer:…

Tesia Marshik* asserts that meaningful context is the most important element in learning and remembering. But there are two main drawbacks to this approach to sentence instruction: first, it’s very time-intensive for both students and instructor; second, it does not encourage students to understand the principles behind clear and correct sentence structure; these principles are essential to correct errors and create varied, yet clear and correct, sentences. Another approach to helping students write clear, varied, and correct sentences has the instructor teaching the class as a whole about locating and correcting errors and also about crafting sentences. Ideally, these two approaches are combined. Learning grammatical terms, the…

The academic community has long debated the need to teach grammar skills and its benefits to students. Unfortunately; college students are graduating every day without the simple basic knowledge of sentence structure, spelling or grammar (College Boad, The National Commission on Writing for America 's Families, Schools, and Colleges, 2004). Traditionally, two different approaches have been used. In the 60’s, a “rule-based”, approach which used repetitive drills and sentence diagramming was employed. This theory was proven ineffective by Weaver in 1996 (Weaver, 1996), and a “context-based”, theory was adopted,…

It is astonishing that my journey through English class has come to a close. My path has been a smooth and enjoyable one, and it is with great sadness that I begin to gather up the ends of my literary education. I know that I will continue to grow and develop as a critical reader/thinker throughout my life, but I will miss the educational structure that has shaped my literary understanding for the last year.…

This assignment will be a piece of reflection based on a clinical decision I have assisted in during my placement. This reflection will relate to a situation that occurred in my clinical work where I felt that I have learnt something that is of value to my practice. The clinical decision was based on wound dressing. I will identify what I have learned from the experience and how this relates to theory that has been researched. To help me with this reflection I will use Gibbs (1988) model of reflection. For the purpose of confidentiality I will call the patient Mrs H. The description of events will be in the appendix.…

This semester in 1010 has definitely been challenging for me, but I have learned a great deal. Although I’m not a fan of writing papers, I do have to agree it has helped me increase my knowledge in English composition. Before this semester, I had no clue in the world what rhetorical skills were, and now I am writing a paper on them. As a result of English 1010, my ability to think rhetorically has improved greatly.…

The frequency of their use was relatively as high as compensation strategies. Although numerically they were used less frequently than affective and compensation strategies, cognitive strategies did not show significant difference with them. In other EFL studies, such as Wharton (2000), Bremner (1999), and Park (1997) cognitive strategies were reported to be among approximately at the middle of the rank of strategy categories. Oxford (1990) supposed that cognitive strategies werecrucial in learning a new structure because they operate directly on incoming information. Besides, O’Malley and Chamot (1990) regarded cognitive strategies as the most popular strategies with language learners. In the current study, cognitive strategies appeared in the middle of the rank of strategies and were used at a medium level. A quick review over the cognitive strategies used frequently by the participants of this study may justify their frequent use. These strategies were such as“I say a new grammar structure to myself several times,” “I do grammar exercises at home,” “I try to practice a new grammar structure in speaking,” “When I see a new grammar structure, I use the context/situation, the dialogue, or the picture to understand its meaning, “I write emails, letters or compositions to practice the newly learnt grammar structures,” “When I learn a new grammar structure, I compare it with my own language…

When it comes to teaching grammar two main trends have been competing with one another for ages, these are: deductive and inductive approaches. While the first one seems to be more successful as it has continuously been applied since ancient times, the other was appreciated only in Classical, Reneissance, 19th and 20th century (Johnson, 1999, p. 147). However, it seems to have gained real popularity recently. We can observe (Johnson, 1999, p. 147), that the deductive approach was extremaly in favour in the Middle Ages, 18th and 19th century, when reading, writing and translating texts were regarded as the most important skills. Luckily, nowadays advantages of inductive teaching have been discovered and a lot of the latest coursebooks of English Language Teaching consider this approach as a very effective one (Sikorzyńska, 1995, p. 8).…
