Abstract
In the domestic low-cost airlines industry of Thailand, there are three major airlines, which dominate the industry’s output, Thai Air Asia, the current Market leader, Thai Airways International’s own Nok Air and Orient Thai and One Two Go, a joint operation. How do low-cost airlines compete in a highly competitive market? How far do the characteristics of the competition and the price war in the industry, lead to prosperity or destruction? In both Thailand and a more mature market like the US, the low-cost airlines industry doesn’t seem to profit pleasingly. This raises more questions, what would a successful low-cost airline possibly do to gain a sustainable business success? Perhaps, non-pricing competition? To respond to these questions I chose to investigate Thailand, a famous tourist destination, as a studying ground. By doing so, I will investigate the following research question:
To what extent does the competition in the domestic low-cost airlines industry of Thailand reflect price versus non-price factors?

It is clearly suggested by the study of the concentration ratio and the income statement ratio that the price competition is at its peak, where cost could not be lower any further, to gain profit. Non-pricing competition in low-cost airlines industry is unconventional. However Thai Air Asia proves that it can certainly shake the industry and reframe the competition. Even though the end result of the game is still unknown, the market and business performance shows a positive momentum to

According to a study generated by IBISWorld on the Annual Global Airline industry revenue for 2014, figures were indicated at $745bn with over 9,000 businesses worldwide. From such figures we can infer that global competition in this industry is inevitably high. Such competition is present and can be seen in examples like existing Airline companies such as Etihad and Emirates which offer similar services, packages and prices to its customers. What can be noticed however with the Airline industry is that the threat of new entrants is quite low - this is in large part due to the fact that the Airline business involves a billion dollar investment and high capital (Porter, 2008). It is also a service which although used frequently, in one customer’s life-time; the extent of use may vary depending on many situational factors such as seasonality, business or leisure purposes and so forth. In Australia, the same notion holds in terms of new entrants to the marketplace. Major players in the Australian Airline network include Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar.…

Deregulation of airline industry in US brought many changes to the way the industry operated, which automatically resulted in increase in the number of carriers which specialized in services which were limited to regions and non-stop operations round the clock. These low cost carriers strategy was to purchase older cheaper aircraft and sometimes also operated outside the boundaries of industry wide online reservation systems which many of the larger carriers have implemented effectively. Against the inconvenience caused to the passengers, low fares as compared to the industry standards were offered to the passengers and every now and then new marketing strategies were implemented in order to lure more passengers to use their services on the basis of cost based competitive strategy. This paper also focuses on one of the low cost airline i.e. Delta Airlines and its oligopolistic position in the airline industry. By investigating Delta Airlines, a better analysis of price vs service impact in the airline industry as a whole can be understood and the impacts on travelers and people investing in the organization. Till late 1070s, much of the prices were setup by the government which resulted in price not being a factor of competitive…

Competition started when Indigo entered the market with the lowest price – as the low cost carrier. Already airlines industry was on the edge of bust era. There were bigger players like Jet Airways, Air India etc. Recently we saw Spice jet decreasing price as “10 lakh seats at an all-inclusive fare of Rs 2,013 for any domestic flight between February 1 and April 30”,and there was a dramatic change in the price of Jet Airways, which usually doesn’t prefer change in prices – that is if we see history, whenever Indigo has changed the price we couldn’t see any price change factor or reaction as of price change from Jet Airways – so this comes to stay competitive in the market by decreasing price by “Jet Airways is offering the 20 lakh seats on over 450 domestic flights across 57 destinations operated by it and JetKonnect” . We can see excerpt from the daily news paper stating price…

Now we will talk about the external factors that affect Air Asia in price strategy. The first one is the market and demand. As we know that Air Asia Company is in the oligopoly market structure, in oligopoly the firm in this market is alert and responsive to competitors’ pricing and moves. The next is the price elasticity of demand; the flight ticket is price elasticity product. So if the price decreases, the demand will increase many. The last and the most important factors is the Economy factors. The happened of inflation, recession will affect the consumer spending and their perceptions of the price. For Air Asia, they set the price very low, so the people will consume it rather than their competitors.…
