Instead, I moved out on my own where I wandered aimlessly without ever leaving my bed. To admit that my excursion through depression was still holding me back from reaching my potential and that I needed more help was one of the hardest things I have ever done, and also the best decision of my life. For this reason I enrolled

I came to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in the fall. I suffered from depression my junior and senior year of high school. I was never officially diagnosed, because I lied to every therapist my mother sent me to. I could not be honest with anyone but myself at the time. However, I thought things would be different when I came to college. I thought I would be able to open up to people again, but I never anticipated that I would get worse. I thought college would cure me, for some reason. Ironically, I got even worse my first semester in college. My previous burdens added on to the pressure of getting good grades, being involved on campus, and trying to make friends. It was all too much for me. It also didn't help…

During my time at Gwynedd Mercy University, I experienced many hardships that today made me a stronger student. When I first attended Gwynedd Mercy University, my parents encouraged me to choose a major where I would have a career in allied health. Unfortunately, deep in my heart I knew it was something I did not want to pursue but I knew it would make my parents happy. As the semesters went on, I tried to keep up with the studies but science was just something I was not good at. This led me to struggle and choose another major. It took me a while to finally choose what I wanted to do and I always wanted to pursue a career that would help people in ways other than allied health sciences. I chose to declare Human Services as my major and I became very content. However, things were still not easy for me. The middle of my college years, I became very ill. I suffered from many illnesses that set me back on attending classes. At this same time, I grew into depression and anxiety because I did not want to use sickness as an excuse, but knowing that I was not in my best physical and mental state really discouraged me. As my illness went on, my family was hit with my mother being the only source of income. This led me to having to work extra hours at the crack of dawn before classes, attending classes, then…

Journal Entry #1 Most of my high school experience has not been pleasant. I have struggled with depression and anxiety, as well as physical health problems since the end of sixth grade. My attitude and attendance in school have been inconsistent up until the end of last year; my second junior year. Up until that moment, I thought that school was a complete waste of time, and that the only thing our education system was meant to do was condition people to give up their individualism and turn them into mindless sheeple. However, over the summer I began to realize that having a negative attitude towards my life and everything around me was only going to hinder me.…

Dropping out of school was something I never imagined. At the age of 14, two years before graduation I had to drop out of school. Not because I chose to, not because I didn’t want to go and not because I was a lazy child and didn’t want to learn. I had to drop out of school for family issues. At the time my family was very unstable,…

I often find it difficult to discuss why my second-year results were not as good as they could have been. I feel my reasons would be diminished, because of society’s response to the idea of depression. Coming to Canada, and starting a new life separated from family and friends was difficult. I had attended Canadian Independent College so I could get accustomed to the educational system here. The school was small and populated with mostly Nigerians, so it was a second home from home. I had imagined I would have the best university experience, with the best grades and friends from every walk of life. However, the reality I faced was slightly different. I found it challenging to interact with others, but with time I did make some great acquaintances.…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…

I walked on a thin layer of ice in high school; every time someone judged me, I could hear the ice slowly cracking under my feet. My life was in a fragile and brittle state during my junior year. I didn’t have the support of my parents, nor of my closest friends at this stage of my life. My own parents, teachers, and classmates had lost faith in me; to them it seemed as if I had ruined my life and that I would no longer succeed.
