Experiment 3quantitative Separation Of Mixtures
Experiment 3Quantitative Separation of Mixtures
This experiment performs the quantitative separation of thecomponents of a mixture. A mixture is the mixing of two or more substancestogether. The proportions of the components in the mixture can be varied. And the resulting mixture can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous, depending on the properties of components such as solubility. In this experiment, you are going to separate a water-solublecomponent from water-insoluble components. The heterogeneous mixture isplaced in water, whpre the water-soluble components dissolve. Separatingwater-soluble and water-insoluble components is achieved by filtration. Theseparated solid is dried and weighed to obtain the mass and percentcomposition by mass. The water-soluble component, in a

Add about 150 mL of distilled or tap water, then stir the mixture for 5minutes to make sure that all soluble components dissolve.5. Measure the mass of a filter using the same balance.6. Fold the weighed filter paper (your instructor will show you how), thenplace it in the funnel and wet it with water (using the wash bottle) to makesure the filter paper is firmly attached to the funnel. 7. Pour your mixture from 400 mL into the funnel for separation of liquid frothsolid. Keep liquid level in the funnel about 1 cm below the edge of the filterpaper.8. Wash solids in the beaker with water from the wash bottle to make sure allsolid residues are transferred to the filter paper.9. Wash the solid in the filter paper by gently squirting some distilled waterover it from a wash bottle. Repeat this washing several times.10. Remove the filter paper front the funnel, fold it, then place it on a watchglass.11. Put the watch glass, containing filtered solid, in the preheated oven for atleast 30 minutes or until dry.12. Take the watch glass and filter paper out of the oven. Wait until it coolsdown, then measure the mass of the filter paper with solid in it.

An unknown sample, # 12-Green, was separated into its individual variable components, iron, ammonium chloride, silicon dioxide, and sodium chloride. The techniques used to separate the components of unknown # 12-Green, magnetism, sublimation, extraction, and filtration, were chosen based on the unique properties of each component. Using these separation techniques, each substance was extracted and the composition of unknown # 12-Green was 16% Fe, 15% NH4Cl, 59% SiO2, and 9% NaCl with a 1% uncertainty due to the loss of 0.0369g of the initial mass.…

The five common methods that can be used to separate various types of mixtures are filtration, fractional distillation, evaporation, sublimation, and chromatography. Evaporation is the changing of a liquid into a gas often under the influence of heat. A mixture of a solid and liquid can be separated by evaporation. Filtration is a technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid. A liquid and solid (heterogeneous mixture) is the type of mixture that can be separated by filtration. Sublimation is the process during which a solid changes vapor without melting (without going through liquid phase). Two solids are the type of mixture that can be separated by sublimation. Fractional distillation is a physical separation technique that use based on differences in the boiling points of the substances involved. Two liquids are the type of mixture that can be separated by distillation. Chromatography is a technique that separates a compound of a mixture dissolved in either a gas or a liquid. A mixture of a gas or liquid state can be separated by the use of chromatography.…
