As a child, I never knew the pleasure of having a grandfather. My mother was raised by a single mother, and my father’s father had passed away from a long battle with cancer when my father was in college. My Grandfather from my dad’s side, whom I was never able to meet, was a hardworking middle class man, and then became was apart of the Navy in World War 2 as a Boatswain and my father, wanting to take after his father in his legacy, joined the Navy and served around the time of the Iranian Hostage Crisis and was a Hull Technician.

On Martin Luther King day of this year, I had the special privilege to make rope cord bracelets for the Wounded Warriors Project, a charity and veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, service and events for wounded veterans. For the last few Christmases, I created cards to be send to current active duty members, that couldn't be with their families. Even the little things we can do, can make a big difference and show that we care, and appreciate all that they do for us. It can just take a day of your time. One day of time to show that we are thankful for the years of service they do to protect our country and all of our rights, and our way of life, such as the privilege of pursuing our dreams and getting an education.
That is one of the main reasons why I take my education very seriously. With a work ethic from my mother and a passion and drive from my father and ultimately my grandfather, I push myself to the limits, because I know I can achieve greatness and make my family proud, and I know I can make them proud by becoming the first of the Markert Family to ever obtain a college
