Examples Of White Privilege
Privilege also known as white privilege refers to the rights or immunities granted as a particular benefit or favor for being White. Many people are skeptical whether or not white privilege exist or not, but there are many examples of white privilege being displayed. In many cases, when a White person is on charge for a crime, the punishment is usually minimum or there is not any at all. It’s not every case where the defendant being White is let go on all charges, but in some yes. An example of white privilege is a case that happened around a year ago, People v. Turner. Turner was a student athlete who attended Stanford University and was on trial for three counts of felony sexual assault. Turner was indicted on January 28, 2015, on five charges: …show more content…
Additionally, Turner was informed of his life-long obligation to be lawfully registered as a sex offender and furthermore, ordered to complete a state approved rehabilitation program for sex offenders. In essence, this means that Turner got away with raping an unconscious woman and his only punishment is a six months. If this was a Black student like in the Vanderbilt case that deals with former athlete Brandon Banks, who had the same charges as Turner, but was sentenced to a minimum of fifth teen years in prison. Another example of white privilege that is shown recently is the emergence of the KKK demonstrating their hatred towards African Americans and minorities. The violent protesters were terrorizing citizens, fighting against officers and speaking vulgar about everyone and all the officers did was talk calmly without any sign of aggression. However, if the situation was reversed where African Americans are protesting nonviolently, officers come in and start being belligerent and using violence against nonviolent protesters.     In the book “White Privilege” author and writer Paul Rothenberg illustrates privilege in two ways based on different elements whites and blacks. She states “the characteristics of the privileged group define the societal norm which often benefits those in the privilege group. Second, privileged group members can rely on their privilege and avoid objecting to oppression” (Rothenberg, p.110). Based on Rothenberg’s expression on privileges being viewed in two ways takes away all the other discriminated categories that people put white’s and black’s privileges in.
