Why Is White Privilege Unfair
White Privilege is the privilege that is given to white skin or light skin people. They do not earn it, it is given to them due to their skin tone. White privilege is unfair for people of color, this is unfair by Caucasians getting better treatment, and this has been going on for generations. The majority of the time a person of color has the chance to earn privilege, a white person comes in and takes the chance the person of color had. People of color are told, they are considered “equal”, yet it is never shown as the old quote has been said before “actions speak louder than words”. The government has always said look past skin color and look at the individual’s personality, yet when shown in action there us hate shown based upon skin color. …show more content…
However, depending on the person, it can be used as a source of power. For example,” White privilege is not something that white people necessarily do, create, or on purpose.” as told by On Racism and White Privilege. This shows that Caucasian privilege is denied by a white person, when they know the truth , yet others like people of color or who are not white see it clearly. Europeans/Caucasians are not taught about white privilege, so they are not aware of their privileges they have been given for generations. Based upon color, they are given ‘perks’ such as lighter prison sentences, they find work easier, little harassment by police, and the list goes a long way. People of color do not receive these benefits at readily all. This is significant because Caucasians are shown more care and treatment than other races and ethnicities. With this result, Europeans believe they are entitled to receive more privileges due to their skin color. Caucasian privilege shapes the way we look at the world and the way we look at it. For example, “White privilege is a hidden and transparent preference that is difficult to address.” according to On Racism and White Privilege. This shows that this is a social privilege that is popular everywhere it is trying to be denied White privilege or light skins try to deny they have more advantages than people of color. They try to make it seem like everyone is equal, …show more content…
It is the opposite of discrimination, when it comes to people of color. In the following example by White Privilege Introduction by Peggy McIntosh, “White privilege is the other side of racism…The project of interrogation whiteness and identifying white privilege will have a different meaning for us depending on our own racial/ethnic background, and seek ways to deny responsibility for benefitting from white privilege, others may feel guilt and become overwhelmed with a sense of responsibility for enjoying unearned privilege.” This shows that white privilege is in a certain section of racism, as is more of a superior to inferior ratio. Some Caucasians feel guilt when they get privilege, but they cannot help it. On the other hand, there are some who enjoy it and take advantage of it, those type of people try to benefit from it the most. This is significant because it shows not all white people benefit from white privilege, some do not even enjoy it. When identifying white privilege, it will have a different meaning for us depending on our background. As there is an immerse with a great amount of responsibility when enjoying unearned privilege. In a questionnaire F.A.Q.S. What do you mean by white privilege? “Operationally, white privilege is the flip side of discrimination against people of color... so that if people of color are the targets of discrimination in housing, employment, the justice system, or elsewhere, than

White Privilege: The Invisible Knapsack, by Peggy Mcintosh illustrates an image of white superiority over other colored people. Peggy knapsack is lecturer and associate director at the Wellesley College Center where she does her research. Specifically focusing on women, gender equality and multi culture. Her legitimacy derives out of being some of the firsts scholars to examine whites to be measured in racial categories. Beginning with one of her first arguments, the author states that much like men having hierarchy over women, white colored people have immunities that people of colored skin do not. Just as she said “Describing white privilege makes one newly accountable. As we in women’s studies work to reveal male privilege and ask men…

In this Tim Wise discusses how the so called white privilege came about in the United States and how it was a big joke. He talks about how especially back during the Civil War that the world was off balance. White people were clearly more privileged and they may not have realized it until slavery came about. He mentions that the middle class people were fooled by those of the Elite class. The Elite class made them feel as though they were more important than there servants, which were normally African Americans, even though, the Elite did not care what everyone thought, they just wanted to stay on top. They felt that to stay on top they must create a class system. Elite was better than the Middle and Lower class, the Middle class was better than the Lower class, and if you were in the lower class you were nothing. Whites tended to be in both the Elite class and the Middle class while the African Americans fell in the Lower class, thus creating privilege.…

In White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, Peggy McIntosh provides vivid examples on how "white privilege" is considered to be unapparent for many white individuals and negatively affects people of color. White privilege is an “unearned advantage” given to Caucasian individuals, as it “confers dominance” by establishing that the is white race is superior (McIntosh, 1990). With white privilege, white individuals are protected from the “hostility, distress, and violence,” which is often associated with individuals of color (McIntosh, p. 332). White privilege gives these individuals the opportunity to receive vital educational, political, and social resources that may possibly be inaccessible for people of color. By providing awareness on how white privilege works and how it can be detrimental in the attempt to gain racial equity for individuals of color, this concept can work to improve racial equity by establishing educational programs that inform individuals on white privilege and ending political policies that serve as a measure to oppress individuals of color.…

White privilege is refers to the advantages inherent in being categorized as White. White privilege is usually not something a White person can notice but more of feature that come with being in the White race. It is not a privilege that exists but it is set in motion by people and is enacted upon. “Prison sentences for black men are nearly 20% longer than those of white men conducted for similar crimes”(Blake 1). Privilege is something that people can have and get taken away, like a rule. Since it is a choice to have, it is not a mandatory use. The issue with cross cultures in the word is that Europeans do not realize they are more privileged than they think they are. While European men and women argue that racial privilege does not concern them, African American men and women may implore that racial privilege has everything to do with them, and its negative impact.…

A privilege is defined as a special advantage, unearned benefit that is granted to a certain group at birth. Race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and many more attributes are included as privileges. Privileged people gain ease in society because they are considered to be normal. There is a sense of entitlement for these people because the immunities are portrayed every day on mass media, in the workplace, at school, and with authority figures. This social inequality is very unfair because what one is born into is entirely involuntary.…

Many white people fail to realize that this nation was manufactured for them, on the labor and bodies of minorities. With the slave work of Africans, to the dangerous work in mines and on railroads by Asians, to the genocide of the Native Americans, this country was established for the benefit of white people, on the labor of those they hate the most. Still, white privilege is rampant and prevalent in so many areas of this country, from governmental to economical fields. Living in a colorblind society, where all the history of race relations in this country are magically disregarded, continues the perpetuation of white privilege, which in the end, only benefits white…

This has been the case in America with White Privilege. It started when whites first immigrated to other countries besides Europe and began taking land and enslaving people. They enslaved many people among these people were Africans. People were not able to defend against these foreigners for they were better equipped and had the only guns. When the White immigrants came to America they conducted mass genocide to the natives and conquered the land there for when they decided it was time to write history then they wrote it to make them seem a favorable is possible and also established laws only benefiting the White man and white women alike although at the time women were still subordinates to White men.…

    What White Privilege

Explanation! I'm not saying that privilege doesn't exist, I'm saying that as far as White Privilege goes in Modern Society, it is an anthill being transformed into a Mountain to push an agenda. I agree with Black Conservative and Economist Thomas Sowell when he argues that moral condemnation of discrimination doesn't automatically make it causally crucial, that having a majority in any society is a given, that the idea of a homogonized "white" group in society that is accepted and given privileges is erroneous. The theory of White Privilege fails to give an accurate definition/ analysis of barriers in society and the idea that large amounts of minorities or lagging majorities (in other countries) is due to a privilege ethnic or race group, is flawed and racist.…

Peddy McIntosh highlighted various unearned white privileges in her autobiographical article “White Privilege, Color and Crime: A Personal Account.” She illustrated the white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets that one white person could count on cashing in each day. White people have these privileges given to them by the society in which they live in. The same society taught them to be ignorant and unawareness of these privileges. This system of unearned privileges established by white individuals made people of color feel oppressed. In this system being white is a norm and dominant power. Caucasians, who benefit most from the white privilege system in the United States, are more likely to be blinded to the existence of privilege system and take these privileges for granted it. In this reflection analysis, I will elaborate on most common white privileges mentioned by Peddy McIntosh through my personal experiences.…

This week’s readings seemed to have different topics yet also many similarities. The first reading which was “The Color of Supremacy: Beyond the Discourse of “ White Privilege ’’ by Zeus Leonardo tells us how white privilege is part of the reason why racism prevails even today. The reading even somewhat bolsters McIntosh’s argument that sometimes, white people simply aren’t even aware of their ‘ privileges ’. I however, feel that racism persists because people let it persist. Racism is not a thing of the past that just happens to still be prevalent. Racism is an ugly reality of the present day world we all live in.…

Each and every single white person in western society, regardless of class, gender, or sexual orientation, benefits from institutional racism. This unfortunate truth is due to a concept known as white privilege. White privilege is an innately invisible aspect of life that grants white people certain advantages in life that are not given to people of color. Often seemingly innocuous details many would not consider important, white privilege elevates one race above the rest through societal catering to said race. This societal privilege specifically discriminates against people of color, leading to a racial imbalance and unfairness that has been historically present dating back to well before the colonization of the hemisphere.…

Having a benefit because of your skin color is not a good thing. Some people think that because they are white they should have privilege that others don’t. That seems pretty dumb to me being a white men. White privilege is defined as an advantage that white people enjoyed or have over others non-white persons. It could be a transparent preference for whiteness. In my opinion we should all be treated equally as human beings because God made each of us different so that the world could be diverse. Imagine a world in which we were all the same, I guarantee you it would be very boring.…
