This prioritization of feelings over fact is detrimental to society as a whole because often times, despite good intentions, people are fed propaganda and inaccurate information, which is applicable to several other modern progressive fields including third wave feminism, the gender bender movement, the very idea of rape culture, and Black Lives Matter. Resulting from this kind of misinformation are strong feelings of resentment towards certain groups, resulting in said prioritization of feelings over fact, because in the mind of a progressive, if a situation does not ally with their feelings, then it is offensive and therefore politically incorrect. Another example of self entitlement seen in millennials is the growing collegiate trend of safe spaces.
Some might even go as far as to argue that political correctness is what allows for civil discussion between nations, and to an extent, this is true. While one’s feelings are important, feelings should never be prioritized over the rights of others and/or fact, as facts tend to be much more stubborn. By accepting pure conjecture as fact, and placing political correctness above factual correctness, we become a more ignorant society as a whole. With the acceptance of conjecture over fact, myths such as the idea of ‘white privilege’ and ‘the gender pay gap’ are pushed by the media and politicians to pander to the feelings of others, having been backed by no evidence whatsoever, while the contrary is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Others might even argue that common decency is enough of an argument to justify the existence and implementation of political correctness.
