Examples Of Heroism In The Odyssey
I think that heroism is great fearless bravery. Bravery is a courageous activity that can sometimes be dangerous and risky. The real definition of a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, and or noble qualities.” (Google) Throughout this epic there has been many ups and downs and every time they seemed to catch a break something would always go wrong. Odysseus stepped up to the plate and got his men home even if he had to keep a secret about monsters and whirlpools or tie his men to the rams to escape the blinded Cyclops. Originally he left to go fight for Ithaca at Troy. He faced many challenges along the way but he overcame the issues. Odysseus got back home 20 years later. He won his wife back

A personal virtue that is a major theme in the epic, The Odyssey, is loyalty and perseverance. The best example of loyalty in of the epic, Penelope, who waited faithfully in Ithaca for 20 years for her husband, Odysseus’, to return. Odysseus’ son Telemachus, who also showed loyalty by standing by his father against the suitors who are after the throne. The two analytical lenses that I will use to interpret this epic, is the Psychological and the social class lens. The psychology lens focuses on the internal struggles of a character in a text. This could be seen by the three main characters, Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope. On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Penelope, while somewhat of a heroine, simply was not depicted by Homer to be the hero that her husband was.…

To consider someone a hero, he must boast certain characteristics that are harder to detect in an average person, such as being humble, merciful, loyal, and a great leader.
