While many fishermen depend on the use of advanced equipment and new inventions to catch more fish, Santiago relies on his own ability and skill. This generation of fishermen fish for profit, while Santiago fishes for enjoyment. Being a fisherman is more than his livelihood, it is his passion. Santiago is an estranged man, his wife is dead and he does not have children. His only friend is a young boy named Manolin, who is like a son to him. After 40 days of not making any catches Manolin’s parents tell him to fish on a boat with different fishermen because Santiago is unlucky. …show more content…
Although 84 days have passed without Santiago catching any fish he does not stop fishing and eventually he catches an 18 foot marlin that put up a three day fight with him. Santiago’s actions have proven to be courageous, brave, and a good friend. Each of these are qualities of a “Code Hero”. “Code Heroes” are Hemingway’s main characters in each of his stories. Hemingway uses these characters to express the same theme in each of his stories. This theme is that man is capable of endurance and dignity in the face of pain. These characters faced the unfair circumstances in their lives with dignity, class and confidence. In Santiago, the central character of The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway created a “Code Hero” who personifies courage, endurance, and

Ernest Hermingway’s novella, The Old Man and The Sea characterizes Santiago as an old man who is going it alone from struggling against defeat. In the opening paragraph, Santiago has been without fish for 84 days, and will soon pass his own record of 87 days. Almost as a reminder of Santiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat”.…

Santiago ponders about those who use buoys as floats and motorboats for vehicles. Therefore, they were more modern in their technology and spoke of the sea as their enemy. Hemingway states, “Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys as floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the shark livers had brought much money, spoke of her as el mar which is masculine” (30). Depicting of the sea as male, the younger fishermen believed contesting the sea is the way to reap rewards. Using less traditional equipment, they see the sea as a rugged competition and battle him for…

When Santiago goes on his little adventure, he has to have perseverance to continue with his goal. During the day, the Old Man offered to himself that he “could drift, he thought, and sleep and put a bight of line around my toe to wake me. But today is eighty-five days and I should fish the day well’ (54). Even though Santiago knows that he could just relax for the day, he chooses to have a good day of fishing well. He would rather have a chance of catching a fish with hard work than to be at ease for the day. Santiago thinks to himself “What will I do if he decides to go down, I don’t know. What I’ll do if he sounds and dies I don’t know. But I’ll do something. There are plenty of things I can do” (78). Santiago is…

“Hemingway Hero.” Furthermore his display of endurance coinciding with his courage was what made him able to hunt for the Marlin for three days non-stop. Adding onto the fact that he had to defend himself from the sharks without as much as a moment’s rest and with severely limited supplies. Finally, his friendship with Manolin and his personal connection with the Blue Marlin urged him on throughout the entire journey. Thinking of the Marlin as a brother and Manolin as the youth he must pass his legacy down to, Santiago could not allow himself to give up so easily. Thoughout the short story, Santiago constantly and prominently displays his examples of Courage, friendship and endurance. Though others may not think otherwise, these three values…

Santiago is treated poorly by his other fisherman because he has not caught a fish in eighty-four days. An example of how the old man was not respected by his fellow fisherman is “Many fishermen made fun of the old man… Others, of the older fisherman, looked at him and were sad. But they did not show it…”(Hemingway 11). His fellow fisherman did not…

Despite knowing that he hasn 't caught any fish in 84 days, he continues to go out in his boat every morning, never with a negative attitude. His persistent actions show his ability to go on every day even when the odds were against him. After catching the marlin and being out so far for almost two days, Santiago is extremely tired, but he won 't give up to the fish, or go to sleep. "He felt very tired now and he knew the night would come soon" (Hemingway 67). Even though he could have slept, he mostly stayed awake with the fish, and kept all of his courage so that he would be able to get home with the great marlin. His courage showed when he had to stay in the ocean alone for three days with little protection, and his small food supply. He could have turned back to shore safely at any time, but he didn 't. Santiago faced possible death at any moment, but his courage allowed him to continue on his journey. When the sharks attack the carcass, he does everything in his power to fight them off when it 's obviously a battle lost from the start, but he gives it his all. After loosing his harpoon when fighting with the sharks, he still continues to go on and make a new weapon (out of the few materials on his boat, for example an oar and his knife) and uses all of the energy he has left in him to protect the…

In The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is challenged to fight his way through multiple forces. Him trying to overcome these obstacles are not just because of the threat to his survival, but also for his own personal content and confidence. All throughout the book, the Old Man has to face the power of the Marlin, the sharks and ocean, his own loneliness without the boy there with him, and his lack of energy. His peaceful fishing adventure changed to a not so happily ever after ending unfortunately. Without breaking down these barriers one at a time, Santiago would never have been able to progress like he did though, even if in the end he didn't end up bringing home the Marlin as proof.…

The book Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is one like most Hemingway books. It contains, like most of his works, hidden meanings in the texts. Not only that, but the main character is one of an adventurous, glamorous lifestyle, much like Hemingway himself. Santiago, the main character of The Old Man and the Sea, has been debated over the topic as to whether or not he is actually worthy to be deemed a "Hemingway Hero."…

Nesbitt. Vol. 36. Detroit: Gale Group, 2000. Literature Resource Center. Web. 13 Jan. 2013. Baskett provides a detailed analysis of the symbolic detail in The Old Man and the Sea ranging from biblical allusions to Santiago’s aura of “strangeness”, which he says contributes to Hemingway’s “fifth dimensional prose”. He lists multiple examples of how Hemingway employs fifth dimensional prose like how Santiago is rarely often referred to as “Santiago” but prevalently more as “the old man” or analyzing the relationship between Santiago and Manolin. Furthermore and more importantly, he begins to describe the biblical allusions found in Hemingway’s novel. A large comparison he makes is between a passage in the bible and the symbolism of the lions in Santiago’s dreams. The passage can be summarized to be about normally antithetical and contradicting creatures that live and play in youth and peace in God’s “holy mountain” like a lion and an ox or a cow and a bear.…

Sympathy is a universal emotion that we, as human all tend to felt toward people have an unfortunate, a harsher, more oppressed life than us. In Ernest Hemmingway’s ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ 1952 novella, an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago, our protagonist has strongly elicited our sympathy toward him due to the harsh, lonely, poor and full-of-suffering life that he had have to experience, especially when he loosed the greatest catch of his life: the marlin. Despite that there are counter arguments which proposed that Santiago is in fact very successful in terms of achieving admirable qualities through his journey thus don’t need much pity from others, it’s still undeniable that he is a sympathetic character considering all the mental and…

“Live by the code, die by the code.” Such is the life of the code hero. The question is what rules the code contains? Hemingway himself defined them as “Living correctly and ideally with honor, courage and endurance, not matter how chaotic, stressful or painful the world might be.” Hemingway’s code heroes always lose, no matter how much they strive to uphold the code. How big a hero a man is, is defined by how hard he try to do good deeds. This is also why the code doesn’t believe in an after-life. Everything there is and ever will be is your actions in the present, so you got to make the best of it in a just and honorable way.…
