Controlled processes require attention and effort. They are intentionally done with conscious awareness (Goldfarb et al., 2011; Raz et al., 2006). For example, initially learning to ride a bike, drive a car or read a book. Automatic processing does not require attention or effort. Automatic processing occurs without much thought (Raz et al., 2006). Often, controlled processes can become automatic with practice (Raz et al., 2006). For example, reading a book may require a child’s full attention and effort when initially learning how to read. However, over time and repetition, reading can become an automatic process that does not require much thought.
