Today’s technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate. However, as tech focused companies continue to profit and expand, their emphasis on innovation for the masses diminishes. Manufacturers are expected to release one or more new flagship products every year, in turn implicating an incentive to place aside supporting older generations in favor of quarterly profits. Planned obsolescence is the idea of a consumer product being purposely made with the intent of being replaced and becoming obsolete. Ultimately, my question would be whether planned obsolescence is a necessary step in the advancement of technology.…

Tacit or, in a more formal name, “Hand Mounted Haptic Feedback Sonar Obstacle Avoidance Assistive Device,” is a product made especially for the blind or for people who have vision problems. It calculates the distance to objects in front of them and translates that into pressure on the wrist. It’s wrist mounted and senses things from about 1 inch (2 cm) to 10 feet (3.5m). This device has generally fast response time (fractions of a second) to quickly navigate complex surroundings. It is designed to facilitate a vision impaired person to get around complex environments. Installed to the back of the hand, the force feedback means it does not interfere with other assistive devices that install elsewhere and use audio feedback cues. The learning curve is measured in seconds, everyone who has worn it has figured it out immediately.…

Many conflicting bodies of mind have played defining roles in shaping humanity throughout the 20th century. Presence of a bright future held by society was taken advantage of by the promise of a better life through sacrifice of individuality to the state. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, clear opposition to these subtle barriers was voiced. These books established the atmosphere and seductiveness of utopia and the fear of consequences of acting not prescribed way through character development. A single character is alienated because of his inability to conform. The characters struggle to hide this fact from the states relentless supervision. This struggle leads them to eventual conflict with some hand of the state, which serves as the author’s voice presenting the reader with the absurdity of the principles on which the society is based. The similar fear of the state’s abuse of power and the technology at the expense of human individuality present within these novels speaks to the relevance of these novels within their historical context and their usefulness for awakening people to the horrendous consequence of their ignorance.…

The news in the last year has said there has been an increase in the rate of childhood obesity. What has caused this increase in the rate and how can we work to reduce it in the future. My hypothesis for my question is that the cause of obesity rate and how it is caused is that you don’t see too many children who are overweight or obese but can be caused that there are some genetic and hormonal causes towards obesity and overweight children. But it can also be caused by kids just eating too much and exercising very little.…
