Ex-LAPD Detective Sentenced to 20 Years for Beating Wife to Death

Last Thursday, a former Los Angeles police detective was sentenced to 20 years in prison for beating his wife to death. Dan DeJarnette, a 59 year old man ultimately pleaded guilty for the murder of Yu DeJarnette, age 56. The couple lived in Ka’u, a city on the Big Island of Hawaii. Dan initially pleaded innocent, but undeniable evidence proved him guilty. He had been arrested on May 14, 2012, but new evidence had finally found him in prison. The woman, Yu, had been found on a lava embankment; Dan had reported that he found her there, presumably after hanging laundry. She had many injuries; a later autopsy determined she died of two massive wounds caused by a tire iron. She also had scrapes from the lava rocks. In 2012, a new case prosecutor reviewed the case-there was additional blood evidence found, evidently linking DeJarnette to his wife’s death. He was a prime suspect in the first place; this just locked it in. Yu and Dan DeJarnette had marital problems; his neighbors and relatives all could see the strain in their relationship. She had sought out a divorce attorney, and attempted to take more money/property than she should have from her husband. He was furious, and had no intention of going through the divorce. Dan had been a Los Angeles police detective-a homicide detective, to be exact. He had the skills and knowledge necessary to pull something of this caliber off; yet the truth always seems to come out. He also invested rape cases in the Special Section of the Van Nuys Division. At his house, he had attempted to erase any sign of his wife’s blood anywhere-he used a bleaching-type agent to clean it. Items however were recovered, and her blood matched positively. I think that he will remain in prison, and serve the full sentence. It is what he deserves, and I don’t think he will come out alive. The Hawaii jury indicted him, and no one wants a

The reports showed Lee’s body showed fixed frontal lividity, the phenomenon in which, after death all the blood goes to the body part that is closest to the ground. Such activity could be present if, after dieing, Lee was in a face down position, and stretched out. Then Hae was moved to where she was buried but the damage of that activity of being stretched out and left on her her face was already done. With the evidence of the autopsy it means Hae could not have been in the trunk of a car and with Adnan because the body wasn't buried at around 7 pm like the state used in court. Hae was killed around 2:30 so that would mean the body was still laying on her face at 7pm to have caused the frontal lividity the body would still be face down. The body was buried at around 10-12pm that…

The murder charges were dropped and Anthony Graves became a free man. The state of Texas paid him $1.4 million saying it was what 18 years of being locked up was worth. The amount of money paid out might seem like a lot but there is more than monetary loss at hand. Graves missed out on his kids growing up. There is no price for that. I don’t think there is enough money in the world to compensate for all the things taken away when someone is erroneously convicted. In Anthony’s case the main reason behind his imprisonment was Sebesta. Sebesta corroborated witnesses, held information from the court, and threatened witnesses of the defense. Had there been no foul play Graves would have not been sentenced to death and the justice system would have provided justice. Unfortunately the system is run by people therefore justice is compromised on occasion. This case is one of few that work out; what about the cases where there is no intervention and the truth is…

It included blood, semen, and hair…In this case there are both answered and unanswered questions involving that evidence. Discuss the evidence recovered from the scene and victim as described in the book and its importance in the investigation and subsequent conviction.” The first few pieces of evidence that were found were the notes left by the killer on the wall, table, and on the back of Debbie’s body. The notes were written in various types of liquids. Each read “Jim Smith next will die”, “Don’t look fore us or ealse”, and “Duke Gram.” This evidence was important as police used the handwriting analysis on several suspects to try to find the killer that way. But because the killer had written in fingernail polish and catsup, it was hard to determine the difference and was deemed unreliable. The next pieces of evidence that were found consisted of a bloody towel that was stuffed in Debbie’s mouth as well as hair on the body, the floor, the bed, and on stuffed animals in her bedroom. An analysis was done on the hair found and compared to various samples taken from suspects. Experts concluded that Ron and Dennis’ samples were “microscopically consistent.” However, back then hair analysis tests were wildly unreliable because the tests only compared ethnic groups and not individual characteristics. Detectives also recovered “bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets, the electrical cord that was used to strangle Debbie, a pair of torn panties, stuffed animals, a package of Marlboro cigarettes, an empty 7-Up can, a plastic shampoo bottle, cigarette butts, a drinking glass from the kitchen, and the telephone.” (Grisham, 10) Detectives also tested for fingerprints by dusting the door, window panes and wooden surfaces in the bedroom, the kitchen table, broken glass, and Debbie’s car. The last piece of evidence found at the scene was a bloodstain on the lower part of the wall.…
