No, I don't believe Ethan, Zeena and Mattie deserve their fates. I don't think it's right to deserve fate, if it is forced upon them. The actions of other characters led to their fates. For example, in the story Edith Wharton wrote this, "It was the fate she was forcing on Mattie - why not let her try it herself..." (203). Since Mattie was employed to Zeena and Ethan, she could not have demanded to stay when she was sent away because they were hiring someone new. Mattie had no control over the situation, so she had no control over her fate.…

And in Ethan Frome, it is Ethan Frome that leads the story into tragedy and his tragic flaw is his silence. The protagonist Ethan Frome is not able to express himself, his feelings and his loneliness to anyone around him. This eventually leads to a failed marriage, a miserable life, and to the tragic ending. Without communication, he ruins his life and his relationship with everyone around him. “She seemed infinitely father away from him and more unapproachable” (Wharton 81). If Ethan is brave enough to talk to Mattie about his feelings and truly expressed himself to her, things may have been different. Instead, he keeps it all to himself and eventually is more isolated then ever. In the end, his silence brought about suffering and sorrow to everyone around him including himself, and left the place in…

The main characters in Frome and Awakening fill necessary roles and share similar attributes. Ethan is described as a loner, quiet, and uncomfortable interacting with people in town, even with Mattie, the woman he loves. He cowers in the formidable presence of his bitter wife, unwilling to defend himself against her wrath. Similarly, Edna feels out of place in both the relaxed Creole environment and stiff Victorian society. In many instances, she does not even understand herself and can't explain her behavior to family or friends. Both characters struggle to escape their surroundings. Ethan dreams desperately of leaving Starkfield behind for the West while Edna builds her own dream house in favor of the "gilded cage" in which her husband placed her. The "villainess" of Wharton's novelette is Zenobia Frome, Ethan's wife. She is characterized repeatedly as embittered, inscrutable, and sickly. Her marriage to Ethan is loveless and she prefers nursing her many illnesses than keeping the company of her husband. Leonce Pontellier is Edna's controlling partner, intent on molding her into his ideal wife. He despairs over Edna's abandonment of convention, the absence of proper adulation toward him and lack of motherly devotion. To Leonce, Edna is a possession, an expensive commodity "'You are burnt beyond recognition,' he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage." Mattie Silver in Frome and Robert Lebrun in Awakening play crucial roles in their respected stories. They are interlopers in…

In February 2009, 12 year old Jordan Brown was the main suspect in his own stepmother’s murder. She was found with a gunshot wound to the head, she was eight months pregnant. Although it was very rare to charge someone so young as an adult, but the Pennsylvania prosecutor left them little choice, it is also very rare for a 12 year old boy to commit a violent crime such as he did. Jordan’s defense argues that there were no true witnesses to his crime, no actual proof, but they also say the 4 year old daughter had heard a loud boom, which would have obviously been the gun being shot.…

The accident with Chicken Little at the river was an accident but it changed both the girls and their relationship. I had a hard time understanding why when the boy didn’t immediately come back up after going into the water, the girls didn’t go to find him and dig him out. They just stood there starting at the place he went under. When they saw the old man in the house overlooking the scene the girls got scared but it was never understood why the girls didn’t look for him. This accident really changed the girls. From then on it seems the girl’s fall into the patterns that their families had set before them. Nel gets married and starts a family and seems to follow what her mother did when she was young. This is interesting because it is exactly the life Nel didn’t want to have. She didn’t want to have the straight-laced life that her mother held, however, she ended up in the same life situation. Sula on the other hand takes after her men loving mother and swoons the men around the town after returning to the bottom. Maybe Sula is trying to prove something to herself and Nel and break away from the mold of what Nel did after high school. Even after the horrific actions of Sula sleeping with Nel’s husband, the girls seem to be able to reconnect before…
