I feel that there are no positive aspects due to stereotypes being unreliable generalizations about all members of a group that does not take individual differences in account. According to the text research has shown the willingness to assign both positive and negative traits to an entire group (pg. 40). However they are only applied to certain individuals. While talking to other family members they believe that others stereotype different races and ethnic groups to provide some sense of security. I know that while most of my family lives in Washington DC there is a lot of stereotyping in that area no matter your race, ethnicity,…

Stereotypes are generalizations or assumptions that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image (often wrong) about what people in that group are like. What people think of others just because they look a certain way. There are stereotypes many kinds, about gender, age, and especially of races. A race stereotype of Americans is that they are generally considered to be friendly, generous, and tolerant, but also arrogant, impatient, racist and domineering. Asians, on the other hand, were expected to be and alert, intelligent, reserve and unsociable. Hispanics are consider to be from large families, dirty, not born in the US, unable to speak English, uneducated, eat too much beans and tacos, good dancers, and that they are gangsters who like to get tattoos and ride on low riders. Blacks are consider to be loud, argumentative,…

The negative aspects of stereotypes contribution to the racism in this country. They lead people to believe that whole groups of people behave or act in the same way. This cause causes growing tensions between different groups of people. As they fail to realize that the actions of a few don't amount to the whole. I do not think there are any positive aspects to stereotypes. While I have heard of asians being good at math, black people being good at basketball, and spanish people being very friendly. In the end, that leads to dissatisfaction and confusion when the person cannot match their…

There are different kinds of people living around us. Not all of them stereotype others, but some of them do. May be I too stereotype at times. We are not born with a stereotypical mind. Our society and situation teach us stereotypes. Robert Heilbroner also writes in his essay about stereotyping people. Often stereotypical behavior harms Muslim people’s feelings. Also because of stereotypes black people are judged wrongly by their color, and females don’t get better jobs because of stereotyping. All of these stereotypical behaviors not only harm people’s feelings but also harm our society.…

So what are stereotypes anyway? Where did they come from and how did they come to be such a powerful, influential force in our society? Stereotypes are “over-generalized beliefs about people based on their membership in one of many social categories.” Stereotyping is a way of categorizing things and has both psychological and cognitive roots. From a cognitive standpoint, “quick and ready categorizations, even from momentary encounters, help us process huge amounts of information we receive about the people we…
