“Sea turtles are one of the Earth’s most ancient creatures” (Basic Facts). They have been around since the dinosaurs, which is about 110 million years. The scientific name for them is Chelonioidea. The Earth is home to seven different species of sea turtles. They are Green, Loggerhead, Kemp's Ridley, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Flatback, and Leatherback. Sadly, six of those seven sea turtles are endangered. Every type of sea turtle is a little bit different than the others. The Green sea turtle is about five feet long and 700 pounds when fully developed. The turtle has a wide, smooth, and brown carapace. The sea turtle gets its name from the green color of its skin (Green Turtles). The Loggerhead sea turtle has a massive head, strong jaw, and a reddish-brown shell. There are many endangerments in the young sea turtles lives. Once the mother turtle lays her eggs she leaves; which leaves the eggs to the chance of getting dug up but other animals. “After emerging from their nests, hatchling sea turtles from the coast, immediately crawl to the sea and swim towards the open ocean” (Avens). To avoid animals eating them, they will hatch at night to give them a better chance of making it to the water. “Most of the turtles will not make it to the sea.”(Coasts) Once the turtle makes it into the sea there is all new endangerments to look out for. Because the turtles are so little and do not have a very tough shell, so it makes them very easy to eat. Another threat is fishing nets, which turtles get caught in and pulled out of the water. Garbage is a problem too, because they will eat it and get sick. Even with all of these dangers sea turtles live. “It's estimated that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood” (Baby Turtles). This is a very tiny amount for the amount of eggs
