Essay On Effective Follower
To be able to function in the working world you must be an expert at two things: leading and following. Being a good follower is just as important as being a good leader. To be an effective follower you must be honest, loyal, and courageous. Without these characteristics there couldn't be any effective and succesful companies. Honesty is such a huge thing when it comes to any workplace. If you cant be honest with your company then you don't deserve to have a job. When looking for employees, employers look for an honest person. Suppose Tim works for a convenience store. Tim's boss asks him to watch over the store for a few hours while he runs some errands. If TIm's boss didn't think he was an honest eployee, he wouldn't have left him with the store by himself. So say Tim was in a money crisis. If TIm is an effective follower, he will just earn his mone and do what is right. But, if TIm is not an effective follower, his first move is going to be to steal the money that he needs and when his boss gets back, just asct like nothing happened. …show more content…

Effective leaders use their power and influence in an ethical way to promote the vision of the organization. Peer and organizational pressure have a great impact on how people behave (Gostick & Telford, 2006, p. 35). Diane Peck of Stanford University believes this is what happened at Enron where, “people were encouraged, if not required, to push the envelope” (Gostick & Telford, p. 35). The environment at Enron fostered unethical behavior in order to meet the demands of the organization. In contrast to Enron, at Herman Miller, every employee is valued for the contribution they make and as a result, employees are committed to the organizations vision and high…

This is a common occurrence for people who become known as a whistleblower. There is a problem in the United States with protection of individuals for whistleblowing in the workplace, and not enough is being done for these individuals. Around the world, the assumption has been that everyone will make the correct choices when it comes to workplace attitude and ethics. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are situations where employees will encounter unethical situations and either choose to ignore them, become a full participant, or expose the issue. One’s personal decision can either make or break their future of economic earning potential or opportunities. To begin with, NCOA Course 15 defines the 5 essential qualities of effective followership to be self-management, commitment, competence, integrity, and initiative. While each of these attributes are important to create the whole-person follower, self-management is the quality that I have identified that I need to improve on. Self-management is defined as “the ability to determine one’s own goals within a large context and to decide what role to take at any given time” (NCOA Course 15, Chapter 2, p.71). No matter the position we as leaders find ourselves in, there will be many times when we will not be the one in charge and need to be able to take a back seat in a given situation. If self-management is not effectively employed, problems will not be resolved in a…

Based on my personal experience, the greatest ethical challenge for followers is about the challenge of dissent. According to Jackson (2012), “followers frequently take issue with policies, procedures, orders, working conditions, pay, benefits, values, and other factors. They can’t make the changes themselves, so they must express their disagreement to those who can” (Johnson, 2012. p.276). In fact, most of the followers do not understand when, what to say, through what channels to express dissent by their own personal thoughts. Sometimes, people are fear of respond and express their own speech in the workplace. It is not because of they are not confident with their speeches, it is because they do not want themselves being with trouble and…

When it comes to encouraging a culture of honesty, openness, and assistance, there are several things that can be done. According to Long, the first thing that needs to be done is for the upper management to set the example (2013). You cannot expect the employees to be honest if management is dishonest. Management needs to promote open and honest communication between them and the employees. If an employee has a problem with their supervisor, there has to be a way for them to deal with the situation without fear. Also, if there is not open communication, if someone knows about something dishonest going on, they are less likely to report it. Management needs to communicate the importance of addressing mistakes as soon as they are…
