After Mulholland’s aqueduct operation was done, the World War I began. Since the United States was busy to settle down and controlled the urbanization, US should had been remained neutral. However, to be prepare the surprise attack, US wanted to be able to protect themselves. During the World War I, it was the best time for US to promote more trade and expanded their market toward the world. To do so, federal governments granted money for developing ports and facilities. According to Josef W. Konvitz, through the expansion of shipping, the great port cities acquired a significant manufacturing sector, including shipbuilding, and met the needs of their growing population for food and energy supplies (Konvitz 293). It was true that it was part…
Donald L. Niewyk’s fifth and sixth chapters both deal more with outside perspectives and outside reactions than it does with those who were persecuted. The fifth chapter, “Bystander Reactions,” offers four different arguments as to why bystanders acted they way they did during the Holocaust. The sixth chapter, “Possibilities of Rescue,” discusses three different viewpoints on what foreign governments could have done to prevent the Holocaust. These two chapters conclude Niewyk’s book The Holocaust and wrap up the final sequence of events surrounding the Holocaust and the camps.…
Sigmund Freud believed that each stage of a child's development beginning at birth is directly related to specific needs and demands, each based on a particular body part and all rooted in a sexual base. While simplification of his theories is necessary in order to give an overview, he held beliefs that are quite complex. In order to understand the basics of his developmental stages, it is important to note a few things: Freud's age ranges varied a bit over the course of his work, largely because he acknowledged that development can vary a bit from individual to individual. Additionally, experience of the stages may overlap at times. Finally, Freud believed that the way that parents handle their children during each of the stages has a profound and lasting impact on the overall development of the child's psyche.…
Grant is asking four men if he could see Jefferson and speak to him. These four white men who have decided to have complete control over how the rest of Jefferson’s life is going to go. Four white men that have decided that they are better and superior to Grant because of their skin color, despite the fact that Grant is an educated man who teaches, which is respectable. In fact, they think that they’re so much more superior than Grant that they kept him waiting for two and a half hours. Even after the blatant disrespect they showed Grant, he is still debating how to treat this discussion. Grant chose to act like the teacher he is, which was very smart. He showed that he was a teacher through his speech, how he formed sentences, his word choice,…
However, whereas Freud was an id psychologist who articulated the stages of psychosexual development and attributed behavior to “libido”, Erikson was an ego psychologist who talked about the stages of psychosocial development. Specifically Erikson claimed that a human has to go through eight stages during his/her life in order to complete his development. Each stage poses a number of challenges that have to be confronted successfully. These challenges are a conflict between his or her biological forces and sociocultural forces.…
Elizabeth C. Stanton was born in Johnston, New York. As a lawyer, Stanton’s father did not have a need for slaves thus creating the anti-slavery sentiment. Stanton was informed of the abolitionist, and women’s rights movements through her cousin, Gerrit Smith. Furthermore, her husband Henry Stanton was a lawyer who dedicated his knowledge to reforms present in the mid 19th century. Being surrounded by reformers had a great impact on Elizabeth C. Stanton as she used her knowledge from Willard’s Troy Female Seminary to further become a women’s rights activist.…
The question of should the United States seek to remain the “indispensable” country? Creates discussions for former U.S. Senator Hilary Clinton and published scholar and fellow member of the Cato Institute, Ted Galen Carpenter. Each orator discusses their position with reasons supporting their stance on the matter.…
David Sze (July 7, 2015) posted a column in the Huffington Post entitled, “Money and Happiness? It’s Complicated.” As the title suggests, Sze discusses the link between having money and finding happiness, or “life satisfaction.” He approaches the issue from a post-modern perspective without considering any transcendent categories to evaluate the issue. Leaving a theistic perspective out, Sze struggles to find an adequate explanation for meaning, happiness and satisfaction in life.…
While the Constitutional Convention created the constitution, they also had many agreements and compromises along the way. They had made the Great Compromise, the ⅗ Compromise, and the Electoral College. While some did do good, it did not create equality.…
Fidelity does not necessarily mean that everything written in the Constitution word for word is exactly correct. Fidelity does still have to leave some room for interpretation of the document. Not all parts of it are made clear so one has to interpret. The key to fidelity is that when interpreting the Constitution the individual doing so must do it in regards to what the rest of the document says. If the interpretation does not line up with the rest of the Constitution, it does not portray fidelity. The following statement in Meese’s essay backs fidelity quite well, “Where the language of the Constitution is specific, it must be obeyed. Where there is a demonstrable consensus among the framers and ratifiers as to a principle stated or…
Every year, the diverse population of immigration has increased in the U.S.A., so many schools are faced with various and different culture, society and language. The U.S. Demographics Harold Hodgkinson, a participant in the president’s initiative on race, suggested that the statistical data of diverse population is necessary for considering school practices and policies, as well as, the environment of education. I agree with Harold Hodgkinson suggestion that the demographics are connected with education. Many schools use demographic surveys to recognize student’s race, age, and society. The demographics are helpful to recognize a diverse range of other social and cultural factors, so many schools or educators can consider variable in…
In critiquing the Foreign Fighters Bill introduced by the Australian government, Zifak (2014) notes how the vague wording of definitions meant that even individuals not involved in ‘terrorist’ activity overseas would be potentially trialled as so (p. 22). The bill notes “foreign incursion” (p. 22) as involving acts of “subversion” (p. 22), and plans to “overthrow the government” (p. 22). If such acts done overseas could be broadly categorised as acts of or in support of terror, Zifak argues that this implicates the possibilities of subversion for other ‘noble’ political or ideological motives. He cites East-Timorese Australians fighting against the “genocidal” (p. 23) Suharto in Indonesia as an example. Zifak’s critique shows how the line between…
Many will debate the argument with the women’s right movement and the motto “It’s my body, so I can do what I want with it.” However, alternating your body in any easy is a huge decision and will have permanent affects. Zukerman explains the process before a patient goes under. Screenings, and interviews are inducted by the doctors to determine the main reason behind the patients desire for body enhancement. Reasons unrealistic, or benefiting other people, other than the patient, will be denied. However, motivations of self-confidence and self -acceptance are approved. (Zuckerman, 2016) Discussed previously, these motives are not valid reasons, nor helpful solutions to acquiring alterations at a young age. To explain, teenagers partake in using…
