Eratosthenes

Eratosthenes was a Greek multi-skilled man who lived from 276BC to 194BC and was born in Cyrene.

What He Did

He discovered that the earth was spherical by reading in a book that on the longest day of the year these two wells that were in two different cities (Syene and Alexandria) cast different shadows. At that point in time the Earth was thought to be flat. This didn’t make sense because the shadows should be the same length. He figured that this meant that the Earth was spherical.

The diagram in figure 1 shows that it made no sense for only one of the wells to have a shadow.

The diagram in figure 2 shows how Eratosthenes thought the Earth must be, because there was only one shadow.

Figure 3: The angle at the surface is equal to the angle at the centre of the Earth.

He then got those figures and multiplied it by 50 to make 360. He then realised that the circumference of the Earth was from Syene to Alexandria multiplied by 50. To find out that distance he got a slave to pace out the distance between the two cities. The slave came back and told him 5,000 stadia (1 stadia = 157.5m) so that meant that the circumference of the Earth was 250 000 stadia (39 375km). However it wasn’t until 1700 that it was actually accepted that the Earth was round. Eratosthenes was less than 2% of the accurate

More About Angles shows just how important angles are to all polygons, especially triangles. Angles are mostly what decide the shape of triangles. This activity was about grouping similar angles from a set of parallel line with another line intersecting both of them. This activity had an important connection to figuring out the final shadows equation because we put the problems in terms of triangles and triangles are heavily linked with angles. After all, triangles do mean three…

Now consider that one of the prisoners got free and slowly made their way up and out of the cave. At first they would be blind by the bring light of the sun outside the cave and they would be disoriented and in pain. But slowly over time they would begin to see that the reality of a tree isn't the shadow that they had seen on the cave wall but the thing that cats the shadow. Eventually they would be able to look up and see even the sun.…

He then compares the very different beliefs of the shape of the earth in the Middle Ages with the ancient Greek ideas. Although the ancient Greeks were more accurate in their thinking, he later brings up the unfortunate fact that the Greek’s ideas were ignored and left out of the bible. This put scientific advancement more than a thousand years behind what it could have been. He continues…

We know nothing of his early life. Themistocles (thuh MISS tuh kleez) was born between 510 and 520 BC and stepped onto the world stage in 490 BC. At that time, the lives of the Greeks were entwined with the imperial ambitions of the Persians, the greatest military power in the world, who had just retreated to Persia from their loss by outnumbered Athenians at the Battle of Marathon. All serious statesmen and military leaders fully expected the Persians to return. In 482, Themistocles challenged Aristides for leadership of Athens, believing that Athens could only defeat Persia, ultimately, on the sea, Aristides placing his hope on another victory on land. Themistocles won the challenge, and immediately turned the Athenian wealth into naval expansion.…

Verisimilitude in short, is the appearance of truth. The more truthful that something seems, the closer it is to the actual truth. Euphiletos was on trial for conspiracy to commit murder. Given the facts from this case I would have to say that he is innocent. If we are to just go by the facts and testimony, Euphiletos was justified for the murder of Eratosthenes because Athenian law allowed him such justice. On the other hand the part that makes me feel that he was guilty is the fact that he was “prepared” to find his wife in bed with another man. Regardless of how he obtained that information, he was in a way expecting that. We will see in the arguments that even though in Euphiletos’ mind he was expecting to walk in on his wife committing adultery, his argument will support the fact that there is doubt it was completely pre meditated. Its all a matter of painting the right picture, regardless of what you believe and don’t believe.…

In the beginning, Plato states that there are a group of people sitting in a cave who face a wall and cannot turn around or move. Behind them is a fire and a curtain, behind which are people who pass by with gear and equipment they carry. This fire behind the people in the cave casts a shadow on the wall and, because the people in the cave cannot turn around, therefore the people believe that the shadows are ultimately real. Plato uses this setting and background to reflect human beings and their thought processes since they apparently see the shadows as real objects but do not realize that the only real objects exist where they cannot see. The shadows on the wall are the imperfect and skewed reflections/representations of the Forms which are real.…

“On the Murder of Eratosthenes”, written by Lysias, was the defense argument used by Euphiletos during his murder trial. Euphiletos killed fellow Athenian Eratosthenes for committing adultery with his wife. He was on trial to determine if the killing was premeditated murder or justice. While the verdict of the trial is not known, the trial can be evaluated and much can be learned about daily life in an Athenian family and the Athenian views on women from this case that took place ca. 403-380 B.C.…
