Equality Vs The Unconquered
While reading chapter four in Anthem Equality asks the Golden Ones “ What name have you given us?” and they reply with “ The Unconquered.”. While reading this I realized why they call Equality this. The Golden Ones clearly realize that Equality is different from the other men in the society, for they speak to them, they respect women, and they keep secrets. All of these characteristics that Equality holds are complete opposite from the collectivist ideal, therefore, the Golden Ones call them The Unconquered because they have yet to be conquered by collectivism and the society. Also while reading chapter four Equality states, “ The head of the Golden One bowed slowly.”, thus showing him using singular pronouns. Throughout the story equality

One particular day, The Golden One suddenly stopped and told Equality 7-2521, "We are one... alone... and only... and we love you who are one... alone... and only," (87). In saying this, The Golden One again stands for Equality 7-2521's ideals, because she is trying to express her individual love for him, not using the word "we." She was never taught the word "I," therefore does not know how to say "I love you." She instead refers to herself as "alone and only" to show that she means only she loves him. This represents independence, because that Golden One is trying to break away from referring to herself as "we," which would imply her whole community. Now she has shown that she has separated herself from the community and no longer thinks of herself as "we," but as "alone, and…

In the book Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 had never seen his physical appearance. He was surprised seeing such a strong individual staring at him. One day after escaping into the woods, he finally met himself at a flowing stream and gained new confidence. This was an essential part to the theme of "Anthem." This shows how Equality finally found himself as an "I" in order to help others see themselves as an "I." This is an important part of "Anthem" since it reveals Equality 7-2521's determination, bravery, and development as a person.…

In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand the character Equality 7-2521 differs from the people he is surrounded by because he does not want to live his life by rules that are set by the government, also he wants to learn about subjects he is interested in. Although it is a sin for street sweepers to learn about anything he has a special gift of understanding his school work although street sweepers are supposed to be unintelligent. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem Equality is different from his brothers because he wants to be his own person by doing things that interest him, while Equality is trying to live his life without following the rules he finds that he does not want to be a street sweeper and wants to learn about science and other things that interest him, this leads to Equality having confidence in what he believed and having a high ego.…

First, Equality and Howard are different from their own society. Howard is an architect who designed many buildings, but the society does not approve his ideas because they want to have a Greek design on those buildings except Howard likes his buildings the way they are. Equality speaks out, "Neither am I the means to any end others may wish to accomplish. I am not a tool for their use. I am not a servant of their needs. I am not a bandage for their wounds. I am not a sacrifice on their altars." (Anthem 95). He does not want to serve the society for its own needs. In fact, Equality also tells himself, " I am done with this creed of corruption." (Anthem 97). He wants to be separate from the corrupted society's rules and laws that were preventing him from succeeding in his future life. Both, Equality and Howard, have shown that they are very different than society, but the same compared to each…

I believe that it was correct for Equality to denounce the morals of his old society, especially after the way that he fled them. When he left he ran because they feared change due to the fact that someone had worked on it alone. They also took the lazy approach and said that it would be far too hard to get everyone to agree to the new form of light rather than the candle. Given the manner in which they refused him, it seems that they wanted to keep people unaware that such things were even possible. Equality is the type of person who is independent and thinks that progression is important to mankind. In the end of the book he comes to think that mankind for some reason progressed backwards by beginning the worship of the word, “we.”…

Equality knows that individualism is amazing. He knows it will lead to great things. “...This god who will grant them joy and peace and pride. This god, this one word: I” (97). This is why he is The Unconquered, because he is not conquered by the society he lives in. He overcame all odds, and, just like Prometheus, brought light back into this world.…

The way I interpret equality is that we are all the same species; human. The amount of respect we are treated with should be based on our accomplishments and attitude not our race, gender, or beliefs. In Anthem, conventional wisdom has it that “[w]e are one in all and all in one.” (19) Besides their occupations, the expectations are the same from each person in Anthem. They believe that everything they do is for the good of all men and never for their individual selves. Prometheus “strive[s] to be like all [his] brother men, for all men must be alike” (19). Similar to the Council, Hillary Clinton, one of the presidential candidates stated, “…everyone has a place, if…you do your part, you contribute to the community. That’s what America is.” People are so often discriminated for being different that a great deal of them would conform to a collectivist society in which they would all be treated the equally in a split second.…

According to the quote “We have given you a name in our thoughts, Liberty 5-3000”(55). The following quote shows that people in anthem are not even allowed to pick there own name. Without letting the people to express themselves, the technology and science will never be able to change or improve because people won't be able to claim and think of great ideas to change the technology. The council does not allow people to express themselves because every brother must be equal. Equality thinks different and whenever he leaves Anthem and goes into the uncharted forest he decides to change his name to Prometheus. Again Equality was a step closer to improving technology and science in Anthem because he was entirely different from his…

Every great nation was built on something. Whether it be set of values, a notion or a few key principles, whatever it was set the tone for how a united people would lead their lives. With the monumental Declaration of Independence, thirteen originally British colonies became one nation under several “self-evident truths”. This foundational document states clearly and firmly that “all men are created equal…with certain unalienable rights…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” With this proclamation in 1776, The United States promised to stand on a steadfast ethic of equality. Eleven years later, the United States Constitution was introduced to detail and cement the beliefs raised in the Declaration of Independence. The “supreme law of…

Why not just live out a happy, simple life like all of his brothers? But Equality has said that “we cannot stop now, even though it frightens us that we are alone in our knowledge” (54). The abundance of power has begun to scare Equality, but he remains adamant in his efforts to pursue higher knowledge and individuality. This cause is aided by the introduction of an alluring woman named Liberty 5-3000, whom Equality refers to as the Golden One. In Equality’s society, citizens are forbidden to take notice of the opposite sex, because doing so would break the law of preference. However, Equality finds himself drawn to Liberty, saying “when we think of them, we feel of a sudden that the earth is good and that it is not a burden to live” (41). His feelings for Liberty swell, creating more distance between Equality and his brothers and leading him further down the path of…
