In William Goldings “Lord of the Flies” and the movie “Hotel Rwanda” directed by Terry George both Ralph and Paul Rusesabaginas courage proved that an ordinary person can act against great evil. Both the book and the movie have a similar setting, theme, character, tone, and mood. The setting in “Lord of the Flies” and “Hotel Rwanda “is very similar. In “Lord of the Flies” the boys are stuck on a deserted island with no help and in “Hotel Rwanda” no one wants to help them so they are also deserted. Also in the movie they are stuck in a really nice hotel with an abundant of resources. In the book the boys build a sanctuary with a pool and fruit trees. This similarity shows how both groups have a lot of luxuries even though they are deserted. The theme in “Lord of the Flies” and “Hotel Rwanda” would be the breakdown of civilization. In the beginning of the book and the movie everything is fine and nothing bad is happening. In “Lord of the flies” when piggy dies that is when civilization breakdowns and everybody starts killing. In the movie “Hotel Rwanda” as the movie progresses the president is killed which leads to all the killings and no more rules. This is why the theme is breakdown of civilization because when the peacekeepers in the book and movie are killed there are no more rules and civilization collapse. The most similar characters in “Lord of Flies” and “Hotel Rwanda” would be Ralph and Paul Rusesabagina. They are very similar because they want to save everyone and will do whatever it takes. They also try to reason with everybody so nobody will die. In the movie “Hotel Rwanda” Paul Rusesabagina gives money and alcohol to survive and help keep his people safe. In the book “Lord of the Flies” Ralph builds shelters for everyone so they are safe. These are some of the ways how I think Ralph and Paul are similar. The tone in “Lord of the Flies” and “Hotel Rwanda” is unflinching because it takes a look at the worst, darkest side of human nature
