Empowerment In Social Work

Empowerment is a theory that focuses on gaining the power to achieve or gain whatever it is that the person seeks to have. I choose this topic because the clients that a social worker will come in contact with, most likely would lack the feeling of power and need to regain empowerment. So the need to for empowerment is very important. This I believe is more of an alternative paradigm because it allows for the people with less power, began to gain power and traditionally power is only given to those who are of a certain race, class, or gender. My first thoughts about this topic is that the job of a social worker, is to help empower people, and help with the help change the status of the clients. There was an instance when I myself needed someone to introduce empowerment to me. It was when I was in high school. The city that I went to was very poor and our school was unfunded. At the time I did not believe that I would be able to get into college or let alone go out of state. My tenth grade English teacher made a group that she would take on trips to different colleges, help with our essays, allowed time for SAT Prep and also kept in contact to make sure we all were on target. The importance of empowerment is that most of our clients will have a feeling of un-empowerment. The intentions of the social worker are to help the client, but also to help the client be able to help themselves. So the need for empowerment is very important. If you don’t empower your client, you sort of enable them to handle situations on their own; they will always be dependent of a social worker/case manager.
