Explain how children and families can be empowered through effective communication.

In this assignment I am going to research about empowerment and how you can empower children in different ways especially through effective communication.

According to Bruce and Meggitt (1999)
“Empowerment is closely linked to advocacy. In case of children with special needs, the adult should undertake activities with the child which will empower (or enable) the child to make his own wishes known by helping with communication, giving the child choice and decision making skills.”

In my setting we do a lot to empower children and families so that they can get the best they can while being in their nursery school setting. You have to ensure that you listen to families on what they would like for their child, that’s why open evenings/days are so important so that parents can see what the school offers.

There are three important principals that we need to talk about closely when it comes to empowering adults and children in any childcare settings. Firstly it is to be able to respect the individual differences of each child for example a child could be from a different country/background/religion so I have to ensure that the setting/staff works towards the needs of this child. For example this child could have a language barrier and not be able to talk English so it’s important that we have picture ques to show this child what we need him to do. In my setting we have a Chinese child who talks very little English sometimes he runs inside so we usually have to bring him over to are picture chart which shows a child walking inside. Also in my setting we respect individual

    Practitioners in the setting need to have a good rapport with parents as everyone needs to feel respected and valued. Good communication will help to establish any needs, allergies and abilities a child may have, from using different words to describe things to being able to read simple words.     When I will be working with children, there is many duties and responsibilities I must carry out in order to care for their well being. This will include having a good knowledge of a child’s development.     Parents have responsibility for their child we as practitioner must not usurp that role as we only play a temporary role in their lives, parents have the lifelong role and centre role. Carers are responsible for their children but sometimes these individuals rights come into conflict with duty of care. Dietary needs can cause dilemmas if a child has certain dietary needs and these have not been met. Like giving a child pork when it is against their religion to eat that type of meat it is our duty of care that, that child be given their religious dietary needs as its their individual right. A child with a disability may not be able to access all areas of the preschool like outdoor play or resources, the setting will need to adapt as their individual rights are not being met. Risk taking could come as a conflict; children have the right to experiment and experience challenge which helps them with learning and development. Children need an element of risk to be able to learn risk assessment for themselves. But if a practitioner becomes over protective then this is conflicting with their duty of care and the child’s individual rights. If a member of staff neglected their duty of care and was a little rough with the handling of a child this would be in conflict with child’s rights the right to share information that is a safeguarding concern overrides the need to have parental permission from the parent.     To promote involvement and positive relationships with families and communities I believe that an open door policy is essential to have. I would do this by talking with the parents every day at drop off and pick up time. During the morning drop off time I would be able to find out how the previous afternoon went, if I wasn't there to see it myself, and how the child slept the previous night. I could also find out whether or not the child ate breakfast. During afternoon pick up time I would be able to tell the parent how the child's day went. I would also keep daily sheets for each child that would include bathroom breaks, what and how much the child ate throughout the day, as well as any concerns or questions I might have about the child. Another way I would keep the open door policy is by sending home a weekly newsletter informing the parents of what would be going on that week in the classroom. I would encourage parents to call the center or stop by to see how things are going for the child. I know that when parents are working they, often times, wonder about the child's day. By calling or stopping by they are able to peek in on the child and get updates are how the day is going. I would also encourage parents to attend any special event that the child is apart of, such as Christmas programs. The parents would, also, be more than welcome to have lunch with the child on his or her birthday if they are available to do so. I believe that, as a teacher, it is important to be the support system for the child while he or she is at school and while the parents are away at work. If the parents are working on something, such as using manners or potty training, I would be more than willing to help them by reinforcing that task while the child is at school.
