Emergency preparedness is an important step in ensuring the safety of a population. Public health departments all over the nation play a key role in planning, preparing, and helping during the recovery of a public health emergency. A public health emergency is a declaration that requires a combined efforts and resources to a specific cause such as a natural or manmade disaster (Schneider and Schneider, 2017). By providing resources during and before a natural disaster, the public health department informs the local population. This paper will analyze flooding as a public health emergency, how public health departments plan, prepare, and help recover from a flood; the paper will also address Laramie County’s emergency preparedness, and analyze how to create an emergency kit, create a family disaster plan, and stay informed during an emergency or disaster.

Two ways to stay informed during an emergency or disaster is to check local emergency alerts through the radio and through listening to sirens and speakers in the surrounding area (Emergency Preparedness and You, 2014). The local radio stations and weather stations, like NOAA provide national weather warnings (Emergency Preparedness and You, 2014). Staying informed allows a person to ensure he or she is prepared when an emergency or disaster strikes. Listening to sirens and speakers are also important tactic to stay informed. Local sirens alert a large population in a short amount of time; at the touch of a button everyone in the local area is aware of the warning.
