Elon Safe Rides: Case Study
Dear Elon Universities SGA Finance Committee,

Since 1993, Safe Rides has been providing the Elon student body an invaluable service by offering late-night transportation Thursdays through Saturday. While Safe Rides is currently able to transport just under 2,000 students a month, there is a rising trend in demand resulting in wait-times that consistently surpass three hours. During the 2016-2017 academic year Safe Rides has already successfully integrated an additional sedan to the fleet, yet even with the additional vehicle it has become evident that on nights with minimal volunteers and high call rates, it is a hardship to maintain timely transportation. To help diminish such delays, and to ensure that Safe Rides is providing the best possible service with the goal of protecting the well-being of Elon University’s student body, Safe Rides is actively pursuing the acquisition of a new six-passenger van. With the addition of another six-passenger van (increasing our six-passenger fleet to 3), there would be greater efficiency and a substantial increase in the number of Elon students Safe Rides is able to transport each night.

The money provided by the Special Allocations Fund will ensure that Safe Rides is able to continue to provide all students with safe transportation and reduce Elon’s risk of drinking related accidents. Furthermore, it will be an example how SGA funds can directly and positively effect the student body as a whole. Safe Rides hopes that SGA will seriously consider this

An American writer and futurist, Alvin Toffler once said, “Our technological powers increase, but the side effects and potential hazards also escalate.” What Toffler is inferring is that in this 21st Century, humans are born into a world full of wonderful gadgets. But behind all these wonderful gadgets lies some pretty scary effects to it. With the knowledge of knowing that there is a high possibility of getting into a car accident; teens nowadays, including adults, use their phones while driving. Since the roads humans drive on everyday are saturated with ignorant use of cellphones, the risk of one's life and the pedestrians life is summiting. Nowadays, humans think that they can multitask, but they are wrong. Quite a lot of deaths and road…

Anyone who has a teenage driver in their household has noticed a change in the teen. They have become more truthful and it has come less likely for them to come up with inappropriate lies and excuses. Lies and excuses only lead to a bigger punishment. They ramble on about how they “Forgot the time” or “ My cell battery was low” or even try to make the parent seem like it was them who forgot and they will try to use “I told you where I was, honestly, don’t you remember?” This show that teens like to make up excuses to stay away from punishment, but with the SafeTrak, it is guaranteed that the parent will know where there teen has been.…

Texting, statistics prove, is not only rising but creating problems on the nation’s highways. In the United States, texting increased from 9.8 billion messages a month in January of 2009 to 99.4 billion in January of 2010 (Bandelier 28). As quoted in “Time for a Change,” researcher Alan M. Tercero claims, “As many as 70 percent of those messages are being sent by people driving cars” (Automotive Review Council 29). An insurance accident investigator, Barry G. Hulicki, says that drivers using cell phones were involved in 22 percent of the fatal automobile accidents that occurred in 2011. Hulicki also cites law-enforcement and traffic-safety personnel as predicting that this percentage could rise as much as two percent per year…

Another safety measure are that rumble strips have also been added to reduce the number of crashes. This way when a driver is being distracted and drifts out of their lanes, the rumbling that the ridges make will bring them back into their lanes. According to Bill Windsor, an associate vice president of safety for Columbus-based Nationwide Insurance, "Driver behavior is only getting worse. Car design and safety features have helped reduce fatalities over the last 10 years, but there are signs—such as an increase in fatalities among pedestrians and motorcyclists—that problems with driving behavior are starting to outstrip vehicle and roadway…

Hope is not lost however; legal consequences have been shown to impact usage behind the wheel. States who universally ban texting and driving, and make it a primary offense have seen on average an 8% decrease in fatalities within the first three months. After this period the decrease is less notable, which has been attributed to poor enforcement after the initial adoption of such legislation. With a relatively new technology that’s rapidly changing, such as telecommunications, it should be no surprise that some of the best ways to discourage cell phone use are related to technological changes. Newer cars are more and more being equipped with in-vehicle devices that make it safer for drivers to access their cellular device and many applications that are often abused while driving. Some in-vehicle devices move the focus of the driver to the dashboard of the car instead of their phones, therefore not completely diverting the driver’s attention from the roadway, but not fully maintaining complete focus on the…
