Elimination of Ethnic and Religious Discrimination
General Assembly: 2 Human Rights
Topic: Elimination of ethnic and religious discrimination
Country: Tunisia
Delegate: John Marco

The word discrimination can be defined as, “treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit.” One large type of discrimination in the world of today is religious and ethnic discrimination. Religious and ethnic discrimination is when someone discriminates against another person based solely on their religious beliefs or background and their ethnicity. Unfortunately, religious and ethnic discrimination are problems which stretch across the globe and occur in almost every country.
One of the most well known cases of religious discrimination was the Holocaust. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with it, the Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million European Jews and millions of others during World War II. The Holocaust was led by Nazi-leader Adolf Hitler; he discriminated and disliked the Jews merely because they were Jewish. Rather than actually getting to know any of them and then judging their character once he was a bit more familiar with them, he made a superficial judgment, decided he disliked them, started to discriminate against them, and eventually led the Holocaust. He merely disliked and discriminated against them because of their religion, regardless of who they really were, that it pure religious discrimination. A well known example of ethnic discrimination is the segregation that occurred in the USA during the 20th century, more specifically the early to mid 20th century. Segregation is, “the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment.” Schools, living properties, and even playground are just small few of the large amount that was segregated at that time.

Racial and Ethics Group 13th Edition by Richard T. Schafer defines discrimination as the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because discrimination is the act of excluding a group from some right, privilege, or service which is based upon some form of prejudice or stereotyping. Stereotyping is a generalization of a group of people from a certain race which is usually negative and a prejudice is a first impression of a person which is usually based off a stereotype. Discrimination is actual positive or negative actions towards a person or group based solely on their differences. An example would be an employer not hiring Hispanics because he does not like them.…

Our planet has been filled with cases of discrimination throughout history, whether it be because of origin, race, or religion. Many think of discrimination as a horrible thing that people should not to, but sadly most of us still discriminate. Discrimination can sometimes lead to horrible things, as seen in Germany, where death and despair reaps many who were discriminated against because they were different. Another example of discrimination is when Spain tortured many poor innocent people because they did not want to convert to their religion, which was called the Spanish Inquisition. In America black men and women, just like us, were forced to be set to a lower standard of living that white men and women, just because of the color of their skin.…
