Edward Snowden Biography
Introduction Edward Snowden was born on June 21, 1983 in North Carolina. He was a high school and community college dropout, who eventually obtained a GED. He was medically discharged from the Army Reserves when he broke of his legs in an accident. For the short time he was attending community college in Maryland, Snowden studied computers. He began working for the National Security Administration (NSA) as a security guard and, in time, through technical consulting companies, he secured a high paying IT position with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and eventually a classified program back at the NSA (Edward Snowden Biography, n.d.). Incidentally, to work on a classified program it is requisite to apply for a government security clearance first. Once the interim or final clearance eligibility is granted, the individual is required to sign a Classified Information Non-disclosure Agreement or a Standard Form 312 (SF-312). This form is required by the National Industrial Security Program …show more content…
After being granted a medical leave of-absence from the NSA, he ran off to Ecuador and sought asylum while he released the top secret information he gathered. From Ecuador he ran to Hong Kong, and then to Russia, at which time the U.S. government cancelled his passport and sought extradition from Russia. Nevertheless, Russia refused, and still refuses, to turn him over to the U.S. As of today, he remains in Moscow, in hiding, and is in the protection of the Russian government. It is believed that he may stay there indefinitely and eventually apply for Russian citizenship (Edward Snowden Biography, n.d.). The fact that Russia is providing protection for Snowden and is may allow him a path to citizenship in the future is further vindication in his mind that he did the right thing by leaking U.S.

Snowden has been the source of numerous other classified leaks demonstrating that the NSA is collecting all imaginable electronic communications and designing entirely new invasive methods for domestic surveillance. Some examples defy the imagination when learning that the NSA literally developed programs to spy on Americans through their Xbox video games system along with other online video games such as World of Warcraft. Outrageous leaks of this kind will only continue to surface, yet most of the public wants to generalize these breaches in terms of partisan politics. Many conservative apologists during the Bush administration were vocal critics of the Obama administration’s abuses of privacy; whereas liberals who were outraged with the NSA during the Bush administration were the first to defend the program after Obama took office. For example, Bill Maher said that he didn’t have a…

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and actually have gained a lot of respect for Edward Snowden. I believe that through his actions, the world has been more informed about what actually happens in our government and how careful a person must be with what they search, because the NSA knows every little detail of our life. The movie also scared me because I became more aware of what the government sees and how easy it is to hack every single bit of technology. For me, Edward Snowden is a hero because it takes a lot of courage to stand up against the government and expose its secrets. Many people may think that he is a whistleblower, but he actually is protecting us and informing us about our corrupt government. In the end, I believe that Snowden…

In 2013, Edward Snowden, a former CIA analyst and contractor with Booz Allen Hamilton, copied and leaked hundreds of documents from the NSA, revealing its cooperation with various other countries to establish 100% surveillance across the globe. This secret alliance was known as the “Five Eyes.” Using a secret court known as a FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) court, the Five Eyes can obtain warrants to view every crevasse of somebody's digital footprint, without probable cause. This discovery sparked a barrage of empty promises from the Obama administration to discontinue such practices, as well as the civilians pushing for more transparency.…
