The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a disability as: a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity; a record of a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity; or when an entity takes an action prohibited by the ADA based on an actual or perceived impairtment.
I chose the movie Edward Scissorhands as my example for disabilities, and how it makes life so different from the “normal”. Edward Scissorhands is a movie that came out in 1990, and it is very popular. The movie portrays Edward as having a clear physical disability, and a mental disability that may not be as obvious. The movie starts out with a woman telling her granddaughter a bed time story of where snow comes from and a man named Edward who has scissors for hands. He was completely normal except for the fact that he had no hands. His creator died before he could put hands on Edward, making him look abnormal to the rest of the world.

He later falls in love with their teenage daughter, which is a love doomed from the start because of Edward’s “disability”.
The movie then goes on to show the neighborhood taking advantage of his dangerous looking, yet seemingly useful looking scissor hands. He then begins trimming hedges and cutting hair (human and animal) for the entire neighborhood. Everyone seems to love Edward and his hands, except for two people who are not as impressed as the rest of the

The movie Edward Scissor hands is the typical creepy and cute film directed by Tim Burton and showed to the public in the 1990’s. The movie itself shows a different combination of backgrounds and stereotypes from different decades of the typical American culture. One of the main features we can mention is the snow, which is the breach that helps the audience to understand the connection between Edward and Kim. The snow is the enjoyment of the movie which covers all and in certain way it proves that Edward even though he is confined to his own castle, he can still reach the Levittown somehow through the snow.…

Likewise in Edward Scissor-hands, the film begins in a romantic way with an elderly Kim who Edward loved, telling her grand-daughter the story of her relationship with Edward Scissor-hands. The opening scene of Edward Scissor-hands reveals many of the elements associated with the horror genre which are offset by elements of romance and fantasy. Ass the beginning credits toll in and eerie music is played, the graphics of the cast are coloured white on a black background in a font resembling jagged scissor shapes. The motifs of the colours help establish the movie to be of a horror genre. The gothic nature being evidently exemplified with a haunted castle isolated on a hill seen with huge doors, large spiral stairway, cobwebs and disused machines. However the intensity of music decrease creating a more playful and pleasant atmosphere and a few children’s toys strewn remind the audience that it is not just a horror…

Edward Bloom is a man true to himself, his family, and his dreams. Tim Burton portrays him as a man of great value and the light in dark places; Edward sees himself as that as well as thoughtful, loyal, handsome, and very courageous. The world is portrayed as mysterious for it is always dark though Edward sees it as a very big and unexplored place. He also thinks it is exciting for its mysteries that are held within it yet boring because he’s stuck in reality and information-not imagination. It is for this reason that Edward likes to mess with reality in his stories; for example, Edward retells the story of his absence at William’s, his son, birth. Doctor Bennett concludes the real story of Edward’s absence at William’s birth with a simple, “Not very exciting is it?” Edward’s views of both himself and the world are combined in a way in which Edward turns into an immortal fish in the water which is mostly unexplored and filled with mysteries like the world above.…

Tim Burton’s 1990 Edward Scissorhands creates a whole new world for viewers to enjoy: the classic, perfect world of suburbia with each family living the American dream versus the unknown world of an uncommonly gentle man who is nearly human. The film Edward Scissorhands shows that Edward’s gothic castle and the perfect town of suburbia are meant to be two separate worlds though Edward desires to live in a perfect world, and the people of suburbia desire a change of pace from everyday life. The film also shows how the characters’ costumes and styles are related to their personalities, and how teenagers have hardly changed since the 1990s.…
