Edward Scissorhands Movie Analysis
It was the night of Christmas Eve, the man was making a sculpture of ice. While making the sculpture a woman appeared dancing in the ice shavings falling from the sky. The woman held her hand out appreciating his work and him. He then climbs off of the ladder to see his work but when he accepted how well it was, he accidentally cut Kim. Edward now feeling bad tries to see if Kim is ok but Kim’s ex-boyfriend Jim intervenes telling Edward to leave because he’s a freak and that he was not welcomed. The director Tim Burton then shows Edward from Edward scissorhands cutting his clothes with his hands made of scissors to show a transition in the character to show that he has finally accepted that he will never be normal and that he will never be …show more content…
In this movie, all of the houses are a vibrant neon like colors and the people are wearing bright colored shirts and dresses. People think it would be a nice movie until you see Edward, instead of being bright and colorful he wears all black and his face is really pale. I think burton does this to show that the people are innocent and somewhat clueless but Edward is dangerous and a threat creating a barrier between the town and Edward.
The viewer watching the movie might’ve thought that Edward was a harmful and dark entity because he wore all black and the people in the town are fun and bouncy entities because of the bright colors. Also in Vincent, the story was already twisted and dark and the fact that the color scheme was just black and white made the short film even creepier because the viewer was probably worried for this kid’s mental health. All of this proves that Tim Burton chooses his color schemes very carefully which helps develop his art style.
In conclusion, Tim Burton’s art style is clearly unique. He uses certain colors that help develop a character. The fact that he can use certain colors do develop something shows that this man is truly talented, Edward scissorhands and Vincent are perfect examples of his

Tim burton uses many techniques that reflect him as an auteur. Uses clothing’s and colour to juxtapose characters, give them meaning and set a mood. He uses significant turning points to give the character a meaning. There’s contrast between Edwards house and the suburbs to show the differences between Edward and the citizens, and uses themes like prejudice and conformity to show it was a normal suburb for the 1950’s to 60’s.…

When Edward is coming home and sees the van driving crazy, he thinks of Kevin, who is walking home from a friends’ house. Walking home seems trustworthy enough. The menacing, non-diegetic music in the back foreshadows the abnormal events that are about to happen. When the audience sees the van speeding up and heading towards Kevin, they realize he is in danger, which is foreshadowed by the ominous music. Burton paints suspense in his films and keeps the audience of the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen, and keeping the dramatic events going by using sound and…

Tim Burton is a guy whose style is dark. Burton has different styles such as creepy, mysterious, and creative. His dark style is best conveyed through his use of Low Key Lighting, High Key Lighting, and Eyelevel Angel. The techniques have a different effect. For example, high key lighting effect is creating a looking scene. Low key lighting effect is making a suspense or making it look suspicious. Eyelevel Angel effect is nature or neutral. Burton uses these techniques to describe his style. He uses lot of techniques in all the work he does.…

Once inside the house, the group, including Kim plan on taking money from the house’s safe. Edward is used to pick the lock. When Edward enters the room with the safe, the security system was tripped and he was trapped inside. The group scatters and leaves Edward to be caught by the police and blamed with the break in. Edward was taken advantage of and had to pay the price for Jim’s greed and jealousy towards Kim’s relationship with Edward. He is thought to be a freak and of course, everyone would assume it would be Edward that would break into a house and not Jim. In the movie, there were several gothic elements. The main ones were the twisted, convoluted plots, grotesqueness and architecture. The twisted plot, stems from Edward Scissorhands himself, he is not normal; he was created by an inventor and had scissors for hands. He was never finished because the inventor died. The grotesqueness in the story ties into Edward’s overall image. He is pale, his hair is long and messy and his clothes are dark and made of leather and other like materials. His hands look like mechanical scissors stuck…

Burton uses lighting to change the audiences’ feelings about the scene they are viewing. He creates and depicts multiple feelings throughout different scenes. For example, In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, when the winners of the Golden Tickets are lined up outside, a mixture of high key lighting and low key lighting are used to give the scene its natural burton feeling of cheerfulness and uncertainty. In the beginning of the movie, the town was depicted as a post-depression town with people struggling to support their families. Low key lighting was used to make the scene depressed and gloomy. When the characters entered the…

Tim Burton is an amazing director he uses so many different cinematic techniques to create mood and tone in some of his past movies like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “Edward Scissorhands”, and “Big Fish”. In each of those movies he uses cinematic techniques to create a different mood and tone. The three that stood out to me on all movies by Tim Burton were sound, lighting, and editing.…

This brought a pop of color to the sad and lifeless tale of both Edward and the killer. In her mind, a very enchanting color scheme and prop work brought out her character. Beautiful trees, a calming pool of water, and happy colors surrounded her. When the demon from Carl's mind entered hers, however, she turned to a strong warrior. Blood was shed, and while looking realistic and forming a fearful feeling, the setting remained the same, a safe place.…

Burton has incorporated many of his idols in the films he’s directed. For instance, Price’s role in Edward Scissorhands as the inventor relates to how Burton sees Price as a mentor figure. Burton has this distinct visual sense, when you see a certain cartoon Burton has directed, you already know it’s him by the way he makes the characters out to be. In Burton’s cartoon short-film, Vincent, it’s about a boy who reads Edgar Allen Poe and watches Vincent Price films. He’s not afraid to inhabit some humor into his films. Price even narrated the six minute film.…

Edward resides alone in the dark dusty mansion before Peg, an Avon selling representative, barges in and takes him home after seeing how helpless of a person he is. Edward is a very gentle and humble human being with a disconnection to the real world. Being secluded from everything for so long he desired the attention Peg was willing to give. I think Tim Burton’s primary aim was to sketch out this unique character with his fascinating personality. He wanted to show the audience how this person may look like a monster but on the inside he is really someone special. He easily fascinates the neighbors with his shrub trimming and hair cutting skills. Edward ends up falling in love with Peg’s daughter Kim, who was dating the towns bully Jim. Jim always made Edward feel less of a person than he is, and pointed out that he would never be able to hold Kim’s hand without hurting her. Edward gets tricked into a “robbery” and this misunderstanding turns the town against him. If Edward were just another neighbor, this misunderstanding would have been forgivable. However, since Edward is different and mistaken as harmful he is shunned out of the town after trying to save Kim’s little brother off the street. Edward ends up back in seclusion in the black and white mansion out of the town where they believe he is dead. The town returns back to normal, but Edward continues to touch them by giving the effect of snow falling with the shavings of his ice sculptures.…

This technique is precisely presented to the audience in Burtons films to entail the protagonist’s pain filled past and rich backstory so that the eager onlookers may develop a better understanding of the main character and why or how he/she came to be as they currently are in the present. Multiple flashbacks are seen throughout the film, ‘Edward Scissorhands’, which exposes the misunderstood characters past. As the film came close to an end a flashback revealed that Edward’s creator died in front of him which immediately caused the protagonist to blame himself for the sudden death, locking himself away from the surreal society known as Suburbia. The start of the use of “The Flashback” can be traced to one of his most early pieces of work “Vincent” where the main character Vincent Malloy thinks back to his imaginary dead wife. The Flashback is used to convey extra background information about the main characters painful past which furthers the audiences understanding of the film and character…

Tim Burton establishes Edward as an outsider who is physically, socially and sub-culturally very different from the rest of the community in the stereotypical suburban area. Edward lives in a distant mansion, resembling the Gothic architecture located on a mountain that is severely detached from the society surrounding him (and is made clear through camera angles), and his home is Gothic, haunting and features a darker palette of colours, unlike the other houses in suburbia that are presented in mid-shots as colourful, but also similar and never-changing. His physical detachment from society parallels his social isolation as he is marginalized on the bias judgment brought upon by his physical appearance and his disabilities. He is consistently polarized between social conventions and himself, and the pronounced differences are evidently outlined without any attempts made to disguise or deny the anomaly. For example, when Edward enters society in all of his differences in colour to emotions or reactions, Edward’s differences are exposed directly to the viewer. It is put squarely to the viewer that Edward is an outsider that has been marginalized and has been made an alien in the generalized society’s assessment of Edward. During panoramic shots of the garden of Edwards manor, we are shown his creative talents, whilst maintaining the theme of his differences,…

Another technique used to create a gothic feeling in the film is symbolism. Symbolism is used to make subtle hints to what the ‘truth’ is and to make you feel like things aren’t what they seem. Some examples are the clothing used in ‘The Others’ where Grace (the main character) wore dark, long dresses which covered up the majority of her body. These outfit choices were not only used to set the time period of the movie but it was also used a symbol. Her clothing was symbolic…

In today’s society there are standards for the way people look, dress, and speak. If one person, piece of literature, or film fractures one single rule, they emerge from the crowd and become an outsider. Tim Burton’s films fall under the outcast category. His films are unusually unique. In his films Alice in Wonderland and Edward Scissorhands Burton takes an original idea from his childhood and a common fairytale and pulls out the grim side of the story, yet still keeps the film’s child-like feeling. Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, and Edward from, Edward Scissorhands, are both characters that are treated as social pariahs and also see the world differently. Tim Burton uses multiple cinematic techniques such as side/bottom lighting,…
