Many people around the world struggle with eating disorder. Eating disorders are complex, and they can be life-threatening illnesses that affect the physical and emotional wellness of the person who is being sick or ill. Eating disorder begins from a point when a person begins to get very obsessive about one’s weight or diet and gradually get stricter on how he or she eats. When a person doesn’t eat the body undergoes a lot of stress, which can lead to health problems. Psychological factors, genetic or biological factors, and social problems are the main causes of eating disorders. First of all, Low self-esteem is one of the psychological factors that contribute to eating disorder. Low self-esteem can be caused by negative thoughts or emotions of oneself such as shame, guilt and regret. People with low self-esteem are often sad or depressed, and are always in a negative mood for example, thinking of killing themselves. All of this can be caused when a person or individual avoids social events or doesn’t get involved with people because he or she doesn’t know the type of reaction they would get. Perfectionism is also a factor for example, repeating things until you feel satisfied with it; For instance, I have a six year old niece who is learning to write and repeatedly erases her lines because they are not exactly straight. According to Adolfo G. Bagnarello, “Studies indicate that 30% to 50% of outpatients have a personality disorder, which is also known as perfectionism”. Another factor is depression; this can lead to eating disorder because when a person is being sad or depressed, dieting can make the person or the individual feel some sense of control in his or her life as they get to determine what goes in and out of their body for example, my aunt suffered from depression after she lost her husband, therefore, causing her to be so thin because she didn’t even know If she had eaten or not and what was going on in her life anymore.
