Early Childhood Education: CDA: Goal 1
Goal 1: Safety
In order to provide a safe environment and teach children safe practice to prevent a reduce injuries. Safety in a preschool is very important. In my classroom I make sure I arrange it so that I can see all of the children at the same time. I arrange the cubicles in a way that allows me to see around them from as many angles as possible. In my facility we have a ground covering that is soft to cushion falls. All of our slides and other playground equipment are a safe distance from the ground. All of our elevated platforms have guard rails. We also check playground equipment regularly to make sure that there is nothing that could potentially harm the children. Encircling the playground we have a tall safety fence that is locked so that children do not run out. In addition, I keep chemicals locked away from children. In facility, cleaners, insecticides, first aid solution, medications, and all other toxic substance is kept in flame-resistant and safety-locked cabinet in the kitchen. Moreover we conduct fire drill on a regular basis to ensure that everyone at the preschool is familiar with the proper procedures for handling emergency situations. In our facility we also have our first aid kit and accident reports by the door so that we can react fast if a child gets injured. I also make sure that gloves are worn when cleaning up bodily fluids and that afterwards hands are washed with soap and warm water. Furthermore, at my facility we have strict rules. We have a set rule for picking up and dropping off preschoolers. For instance, when registering a child we ask the parent to fill out a form for others they give permission to pick up their child. None of our preschoolers are allowed to leave the premises with anyone who is not out the list that the parent filled out when they first registered the child. We also keep a record of who drops off and who picks up the child.
As a final point, In my facility safety is a very important factor. We make sure that all classrooms are arranged so that we can see all children at once. Not only do we check the playground regularly but also we make sure all equipment is a safe distance from the ground. All chemicals are stored out off children’s reach. We conduct drills so that everyone in the facility knows what to do in case of an emergency. The first aid kit is located by the door in case of injuries. Strict rule are set for dropping off and picking up children to ensure that they are safe.

Establishing and maintaining safety is extremely important. My goal is to prevent and reduce the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. Preschoolers are not usually aware of the dangers in the environment or of behaviors that can cause an injury to themselves or others. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times. Supervising them by sight and sound even during nap time. Another way I do this is by ensuring a safe environment inside and outside. Every day before the children arrive I make sure all the outlets not being used are covered, medication is out of children’s reach, furniture is bolted, all cords are tied up, that there are no broken toys and that all adults belongings are also out of their reach. Outside, I verify that the equipment in the playground is age appropriate, and there are no splinters, rusting equipment or sharp pieces. I complete safety checklist on a weekly basis and do mock fire drills, so that in case of an emergency the children know what steps to follow.…

To establish and maintain a healthy environment is to prevent the spread of germs and promote healthy eating habits. Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. I wash my hands and wear gloves before and after handling food, helping with toileting, changing diapers and cleaning noses. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. Cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily and mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area and sanitized at the end of the day.…

To accomplish this goal I complete daily safety checklists that include ensuring exits and hallways are open, electrical cords are out of reach, evacuation procedures are posted, fire extinguisher is working, emergency numbers are posted, sharp objects and cleaning supplies are in locked cabinets, furnishings are structurally sound, toys are in good condition, and nap time mats not torn or damaged. To prevent and reduce injuries I involve my children in all safety practices such as praticing evacuation procedures. I model with my actions and words safety practices for example when crossing the street look for cars, when going on a walk outside remindering them that feet must stay on the sidewalk, hands must stay on the rope while going on a walk as well as when evacuating the building during fire drills, during monthly fire drills I remain calm and walk the children through the procedure, and I use a stool to reach in high cupboards (as children do for the sink) and explain it is safest to use a stool. .…

To advance physical and intellectual competence I provide numerous activities to enhance these qualities in the children that I teach. In the area of physical, my goal is to make sure the students are given many possibilities to participate in large motor activities daily. I make this fun by joining them while they are playing. I encourage them to do activities that encourage running and jumping. We play tag, hide and seek, and their favorite game “Mr. Fox what time is it”. When the weather does not permit us to go outside we have free play inside the gymnasium. We are able to use tricycles, play basketball, and build using pipes and blocks. We also do a unit on how to keep our bodies healthy. This is where we get the parents involved so they can learn what they can do at home with their children. We send home a chart that gives them opportunities to be physically active and they turn this chart in at the end of the unit. Then as a class we discuss what we did with our families. To promote intellectual activities I provide numerous materials that they can use and I rotate them occasionally so they are not bored with it. For example, in our art center the children are exposed to many different types of materials. They have various types of paper and paints as well as recycled material that they can use to sculpt their own art. Our class is also exposed to music of many different cultures. We play music throughout the day and one day a week we have a music class outside of our classroom. As a preschool teacher I keep up with what is new and promote these findings during our learning experiences. I provide many avenues for children to find who they are and respect who others are.…

During my observations, I had the opportunity to interview the director of the facility. We discussed risk and injury prevention practices within the classroom, how prevention is managed, how it is approved, and lastly, if there are any modifications being made in the environment in relation to the children’s needs and developmental levels. The director told me all the employees meet once a month to discuss solutions. She mentioned that there are fire drills every thirty days. The director said she makes observations of the teachers every thirty days to observe and see if the teacher is participating in risk and injury prevention practices. Each teacher used electrical outlet covers. All chemicals are out of reach of children. The medication…

My main reason for applying for Early Childhood Education is because I love children. I love working with them. I come from a bigger family. I am the oldest out of five children. I would take care of them all from time to time when ever my parents would go out for a night. Sometimes my parents would leave overnight to go on a little vacation by themselves and I would watch my siblings overnight. I also use to babysit for other people around our community as I was growing up. As I got older and started to think about college, I knew that I wanted to attend a great school that would have a program for Education.…
