1.Introduction
1.1 Introduction
Marriage is a fundamental step in life. In the past, marriage is controlled by the family. There is no freedom for the people to choose their partner and the format of the wedding is standardized in traditional Chinese wedding. Nowadays, under the effect of Modernization and Westernization, Hong Kong citizens are no longer to follow their family’s opinions. They can make own decision on either holding a western wedding or a Chinese style-wedding basis on their preference. The presentation of the wedding becomes diversify.
From different ways, we can see that there are some change between traditional wedding and the modern wedding. Besides, the main elements of wedding, such as ceremony, banquet or even the attitudes towards wedding, marriage and budget management are changed. As Robert Lloyd says, due to the financial independence among the people, the new generation can manage their money without parent’s subsidies when holding a wedding.
1.2 Methodology
The objective of this research report is to study the attitudes towards modern marriage and wedding among Hong Kong people. The survey was conducted at Causeway Bay MTR station. 50 copies of questionnaire were issued within March 2014, and the response rate was 100%. A questionnaire sample is attached (see Appendix 1).
Most of the respondents are females (see Figure 1.1) and many of them are single (see Figure 1.2). Besides, the data collected in the survey mainly implicates the attitudes among the interviewees between 19 and 30 years old because 80 percent of respondents belong to this age range (see Figure 1.3).
The questionnaire is divided into three main parts: attitudes towards wedding and marriage; preferences towards wedding arrangements and budget. There are 22 questions in total ; with 5 questions asking about attitude towards wedding and marriage, 9 questions about preferences towards wedding arrangements and 6 questions about wedding budget.
