Topic: Dreams
Attention Getter: It's midnight and your car broke down right outside of town. Your cell phone is out of range and you have to get home. You grab a flashlight from the trunk and decide to walk to the nearest gas station just a couple miles down the road. There is a very dense nightshade ahead and with every step you seem to get further and further into the eerie darkness. The flashlight starts to go dim and you remember the extra batteries in the car, but you are already too far so you decide to keep going. It's so quiet and you can hear your footsteps on the paved road, "Tap...tap...tap." You know you're alone but for some reason you feel like your every move is being watched. You take a look around and you are frightened by what you just seen. Were your eyes deceiving you or did you just see what appeared to be a light; it was just a quick flicker but you saw something. You begin to pick up the pace a little and then you hear the sound no one alone on a dark road wants to hear...footsteps! You start to run. The unseen person just feet behind you does the same. You see the gas station just ahead but it's too late. You were caught! You scream and find that someone heard you. It was your mother in the next room. "What happened?" she asked. You sign, "It was just a dream."
Has this ever happened to you? Most likely it has. We all dream, but why. Today I will explain briefly what advances in science and technology have to say about the following questions: Why do we dream? What happens to us when we dream? (THESIS)
Credibility: While in Middle school I had the opportunity to take a week long course about dreams and the effect they have on our cognitive functioning and development. As a group we considered what happens when we dream and how dreams relate to our day to day lives.
