Many individuals in the world view domestic abuse as something that shouldn’t be talked about because of the fact that it is viewed as a personal matter. As a result, only 13% of domestic abuse cases in the United States are reported. That is a very low percentage considering all the programs that help combat domestic abuse in the United States. If that is the United States percentage rate on reported cases just imagine in countries in the Middle East like Iraq were they have no laws against domestic abuse. Many do not know that there are different forms of domestic abuse for example; financial, mental, sexual, and physical. Most associate domestic abuse with someone being physically harmed but they might not know that in most cases the abuse starts way before if ever gets physical. Financial abuse is a type that may come in the very beginning, a sign of this abuse may be if a partner starts to withhold money from their partner in the relationship. Then there is mental and emotional abuse where the partner may speak down to the other and make them feel worthless. Another kind of abuse that can occur is sexual which is where the partner forces their partner to part take in sexual acts. Then there is physical abuse where the partner is physically harmed by the other. According to the National Coalition of Domestic Violence “On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines nationwide receive approximately 20,800 calls”. In reality that 20,800 calls is not much considering that in just “The United States approximately 20 people physically abused every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually”(NCDV.org). The numbers may be higher in countries that don’t bring awareness to domestic abuse and have safe havens to go to.
