Dog Checker: A Fictional Narrative
In 2017, by a hillside, lived 12 year old Henry Park and his parents. Just Henry and his parents. Henry was missing the only person who mattered to him, his sister Kate. His Parents were cruel people and when Mr. Black had taken Kate because the two of them were, “Too much trouble together,” they hadn’t done a thing about it. Henry didn’t believe Mr. Black. His parents weren’t dumb enough to either, they just didn’t care. Henry knew he had to find Kate. He peered out the window. Feet first, he started climbing down the vines growing down the far side of the house. Henry didn’t have a clue where he was going, but he knew he would find Kate. He set out, up the hill saying one one last goodbye to his dog Checker.
“I’ve got to keep going,”

Please, I don’t know who this feisty dog belongs to, I don’t bite,” pleaded a dark haired girl. She had light skin and wore jeans and a T-shirt.
“Checker?” Henry exclaimed. “But, it can’t be, I left you home in my room … with the window open… oh.”
“Why’d you name him checker, he hasn’t got a spot on him?” the girl asked as she handed checker back to Henry.
“Um, well, my sister named him. She said one day she could teach him how to play, but changing the subject, I need to get him something to drink,” said Henry.
“All covered, my brother Connor and I gave him some food and water. Connor! Come meet…,” she looked at Henry for help,
“Henry,” he offered just as Connor came running along.
“I’m Myra, and this is Connor, my twin, and wherever you’re going, we can help you,” the girl declared.
“Wait, Myra, how do you know I’m going somewhere?”
“Well, backpack, supplies, wandering in the middle of nowhere, duh!” Connor replied.
“Okay, fine, but I don’t have enough supplies for all of us, I’m trying to find my missing sister.,” Henry said.
“Don’t worry, we’ll get some from our house over there, we’ll tell our Mom we’re going camping for a couple of nights, speaking of which, do your parents know you’re gone?” Myra

“They don’t care.”
Connor started,“What do you mean they don’t-,”
“Shut up!” Myra shouted, elbowing him.
“No, it’s alright, they just, you know, didn’t ever like my sister and I,” Henry said quietly. “Speaking of Kate, we better get going,” Henry said. Myra and Connor ran back to their house to retrieve their supplies, and they set off through the woods. “Look out!” Henry said pushing the twins out of the way awhile later. Where Myra’s head had been, a dart sprouted from a tree. “They came for me, Mr. Black must have sent them,” Henry said, his voice quivering.
“Wait,” Myra reasoned, “You don’t really know where your sister is, right? Well, we could trick these men into telling us where Mr. black is keeping her.”
“You’re onto something sis,” Connor exclaimed.
“Maybe,” Henry said, “I could pretend the dart hit me, it’s me they want, there’s three of them and three of us, do you think we can take them?”
“Oh yeah,” Myra laughed, a sly grin spreading across her face. Henry didn’t even need to explain the rest of the plan, they were a team now, and they were going to do this. Even Checker gave a bark of

Instead, their eyes glanced at the darkened woods, wondering if there was something following them like in one of Chief Black’s stories. While he knew the ghost tales weren’t true, Collin’s sensitive hearing did pick up the fact that there was indeed something out there, but he wasn’t alarmed at all as his nose told him exactly who it was. Finally, Collin found his voice. “You said that you are new here. Where’d you live…

As I quietly sneaked out the back door of Monkey's house my heart began to beat a little faster and I felt somewhat anxious, but I kept on going toward Sarah's house. I remember walking in the thick, dark green St.Augustine grass in my aunt's yard that felt like cushioning under my Mary Jane shoes and looking carefully in every direction to make sure no one was watching me en route to my destination. As I approached Sarah's front yard I began to feel uneasy and a little afraid, but I kept my eyes on the prize and knew Sarah had gone to work. As I stepped on Sarah's lawn, my eyes darted back and forth to see if there were again any bystanders or cars coming down the street. The coast was clear so I nervously made my way through Sarah's front yard to the porch and walked up the front steps to the mailbox. I could see through the glass that the mailbox was stuffed with different sized envelopes with typed letters of the alphabet on them. I stretched forth my hand and gently opened the lid so it would not squeak any more than possible. With my other hand I picked up the envelopes decorated with important writing and carefully removed them from the glass mailbox. As I turned around, again my eyes quickly grazed the landscape to see if anyone had spotted me. I then ran down the front porch steps, through Sarah's front yard, back into Monkey's yard, and made my way to…
