Do Different Music Genres Affect Plant Growth Research
Abstract
Danielle Fraser; Clay High School The title of this project is “Do Different Music Genres Affect Plant Growth?” The purpose is to test how different music genres affect plant growth. The test may or may not validate the hypothesis made, that the plants exposed to classical music will be effected in a more positive way than the plants which are exposed to hardcore music. The procedure is as follows: Nine dyanthus flowers are separated into three groups: classical music, control group, and hardcore music. Every morning plants are watered and left outside for their required six hours of sunlight. Every night, the plants are divided into their groups and exposed to their particular music genre for two hours. Results are recorded

The dependent variable was the plant growth after being exposed to their respective music types. The control group was a group of the exact same type of flower, but with no exposure to music.
Hypothesis: The plant group that is exposed to classical music will grow better and be healthier than the group exposed to hardcore music.
Background Research: Important terms to know: Sound waves – a wave of compression and rarefaction, by which sound is propagated in an elastic medium, such as air; Stimuli – a thing that rouses activity or energy in something; White noise – a completely flat frequency in which all waves of sound are the exact same; tropism – turning of all or part of an organism in a direction in response to an external stimulus. This experiment has been tested in the past, and nearly all results ended the same. Plants exposed to more soothing types of music, such as classical and calm instrumentals tend to grow better than plants that are exposed to more wild genres of music. For example, in 1973, Dorothy Retallack was the first person to test this experiment and share her findings. Hard-rock for example, does not generally prove to be good for plant development. She concluded that plants react better to softer, nicer music, such as

The reason for this, being that plats react better to different types of vibrations. Vibrations from classical music are generally changing, whether it be in intensity, frequency or otherwise. Changing vibrations are what plants respond best to. White noise however, has a negative impact on the plants. White noise is produced by hardcore music, because it is, for the most part, steady and constant noise and vocals, that are usually pretty harsh. It can also believed, because of the all around poor condition of the plants after experimentation, including the control group, that the results may have been affected by the abnormally cold whether experienced during the testing period.
Acknowledgments:
I would like to acknowledge my mother, Theresa Boatright, for all of her help in conducting this experiment and in helping me attain the materials needed to conduct this experiment. She drove me all around town to different Walmart's and Home Depot's so I could find some nice flowers to test on. Thanks, Mom! ~Danielle

The dependent variable is the Brassica Rapa and it is depending on the temperature. Before the experiment took place, all plants were in 22 degrees Celsius for three weeks to grow to the preferred maturity. They were then taken out and pollinated. After pollination the plants were set in separate temperatures to mature for another two weeks. After the two weeks were over, the plants were taken out of their temperatures and soil to determine maturity and productivity. To do so, the plants were weighed, the length was measured, the pods were counted, and the amounts of mature seeds were counted as…

The experimental hypothesis of Dr. Doodley’s experiment states that while listening to fast music people’s work performance is enhanced. In this experiment the independent variable is the type of music (fast or slow) being played for each group; the dependent variable is the performance rating of the group. Ultimately, the experimental group would have been the group listening to the fast music. There appears to have been no control group used in Dr. Doodley’s experiment. There was a variable being applied or manipulated to both groups used in this experiment, which does not allow for a constant/control.…

During our groups controlled experiment we measured the masses of the soil, plant, and the water we put in the plant. We put 100ml full in each cup when watered. We put a table that compared the change in initial and final in weight (grams). For our dependent variable, we put each plant in different cups. For independent variable we measured the mass of the plant, cup, and soil in grams.…

The Article: Plants 'Thrive' Next To Friendly Neighbors And Trees 'Gasp' For Water? Interesting! By “DOGO News” is about plants being able to talk to each other and grow next to each other because they want to. If you have ever noticed that certain plants seem to thrive next to each other, it may not be random, but because they want to be next to each other. At least that's what Monica Gagliano, thinks. She thinks that plants use some kind of sound indicating to talk with each other and depending on if it is good or bad it may allow the weaker plant to live or die. What's even more remarkable is that the scientist believes the talking can happen at the germination stage. She showed with some chili pepper, basil and fennel plants. She began by planting the chili seeds in isolated dishes next to fennel plants. Not many germinated. Then she conducted the same experiment next to some basil plants. Sure enough, the chili peppers not only germinated rapidly, but also, thrived. , Monica thinks that provided with this data, farmers may be able to use sound to encourage or discourage the growth of certain plants, helping to reduce their dependence on fertilizers and pesticides.…

Household chemicals such as Windex, a glass cleaner, are known to be harmful to humans but if they affect plant growth could be an interesting experiment. Our experiment consisted of different levels of Windex mixed with water and given to Brassica Rapa plants in order to grow. Are results showed that Windex barely had an effect on the plant growth and the plants showed steady increase in growth. In conclusion, our experiment did not assure that Windex add a boost in plant growth but we did find that small, insignificant amounts of Windex mixed with water were able to ingested by the plants.…

In this experiment, 8 plants will be tested. Each except one plant (which will be the control group) will receive a certain amount of water starting at 0 teaspoons of water. Each plant will receive 1 more teaspoon than the previous cup, so it would be increasing. For example, cup 4 will have 4 teaspoons of water and cup 3 would have 3. The data recorded will be the length the plant grows up to.…

Together with his sister Nannerl, Wolfgang received very intense training that by the age of six, he was a budding composer and accomplished musician. In 1762, his father presented his son as a performer to the imperial court in Vienna, and from 1763 to 1766, he took both children on a musical tour across Europe ( Crane Arizona Opera ). Wolfgang became the most celebrated child prodigy of his time as a keyboard performer with a great impression too, as a composer and improviser. Wolfgang adapted quickly to the high lifestyle through engagements with the French and English royal families, playing before the Bavarian elector and Austrian empress, to winning the admiration of so eminent a musicians as Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782). The purpose of our study is to investigate the effects of music on student’s grades in Mathematics, Statistics and Accounting. And also investigate student wants to take lecture and give exam with music. Music has been found to have profound effect on the brain. Psychologists and scientists have been looking at the link between music, with mood, work efficiency and concentration for years. In our experiment, we hope to find a correlation or regression between music and its effect on studies and grades. 400 students were selected randomly from the different universities. As everybody in his life ever tried to use music during his studies so we wanted to know its effects. We used a questionnaire for that task. Different socio cultural peoples were used but main three parts was comprised into our questionnaire. Firstly we tried to know that how much students had ever taken lecture or given exam with music. Our first part was “introduction” in which we got to know that how much students know about music and its type and which type of music they prefer to listen. Second part “objective” is back born of our questionnaire because it contains the question of is students like to listen music during lecture, homework or in exams and in which subject they prefer to listen music. Does the music effect their studies and if yes then the effect is positive or negative in their opinion. Third part contains the questions of “Suggestion” in which they recommend that music should be used in lecture and exams or not. They told us that music can increase their performance in math or not and relationship between music and math. We get their opinion on that they are satisfied with grades of those subjects in which they used music. At the end they told us their grades which helped us to reach at a conclusion.…
