Diversity
Diversity is described as the state of having people who are of different races or who have different cultures in a group, but diversity can be more than just race or ethnic background. When we are talking about workplace diversity, we are referring to the variety of differences between people in an organization. Diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, cognitive style, tenure, organizational function, education and background. The effects of diversity can impact how management should be enforced and learning to work with different personalities and cultures can either make or break a company as well as management.
Walmart opened its doors in 1962 and diversity has been at the core of their culture from the very beginning. According to Sam Walton, the owner of Walmart, “The only way to help their customers and associates is to know and understand them, but in order to do that, you must understand and respect their differences”. Diversity affects planning by making it more difficult in the planning process as you must look at the diverse population of employees that you are in charge of and grasp understanding about what they may and may not be comfortable doing based on their beliefs and moral values.
Diversity can also be a challenge in organizing as you have to assemble and coordinate your employees that are of all different ethnicities and you may have to explain things a bit differently to some of them, so that they can understand why you are doing the things that you are doing. I also think that diversity plays a role in how the job is completed and how determined each person is to complete that goal and this also has to do with the way people are raised and their beliefs as well as their values.
In several different ways, leading, is in itself, an exercise in diversity management. You must lead several different cultures and ethnicities of people and help them to understand why things are being done the way they are and how they are supposed to be doing these specific tasks. An example of this at Walmart would the management dressing in the proper attire and leading the rest if their employees to wear the proper attire to work as well. Control can be affected by diversity because there may be some cultures that do not necessarily agree with other cultures or genders being in charge and that may create some distention in the workplace as well as create some problems with authority and getting things done on time.

As a team we discussed Robbins and Judge Definition of managing diversity. Robbins and Judge state, “Diversity management makes everyone more aware of and sensitive to the needs and differences of others” (2013). One way to do this is by targeting employment ads based on demographic information. This means specifically placing ad in areas that represent a minority base; whether that is ethnic groups or women. Another way to manage diversity is through an organizational groups and teams. The differences among the team members will allow members to use their strengths to increase performance. As a group we understand that organizations must be able to adapt to changes in the workplace. Organizations must be able to effectively communicate change, mandate any training needed for change, and implement these changes in a timely manner. Organizations need to understand there may be some resistance to change at first, but that could be a good thing. This…

-1This acclaimed movie which highlights the racial stereotypes that exist in America was a classic example portraying how everyone without much thought has some sort of prejudgment in the way they treat others of different races. This paper will examine my reactions to this classic movie and explain how it represented the diverse culture we have in contemporary America. I have seen Crash many times and have always been amazed at the realness of the subject matter and great example of the melting pot of cultures of the country we live in. As I watched the movie in class, I was able to relate to the characters more closely because what I saw on film is matched very closely at my workplace. I agree with many of the portrayals of the stereotype that were shown as I feel I have been affected by them. The movie producer’s efforts in showing the different cultures and the way they co-exist are very believable.…

This paper will explore my philosophy of diversity. Since I live in the United States, the paper will focus on the United States’ diversity. In the course, ORG6499: Cultural Diversity & Individual Differences we have done multiple discussion journal reflections which relate to diversity. The paper will relate those discussions to my philosophy of diversity. A few of those discussions focused on the United States diversity and it appears that America’s diversity would be pluralistic and Mosaic in nature, which will be discussed a little further in detail. In the course we have also experienced a cultural plunge assignment, which will also be used in the paper to relate and build upon my philosophy of diversity. The Civil Rights Movement along with the Gay Rights Movement and homosexuality will be discussed as part of my diversity philosophy as well. This paper will also consider how being conscious about your own personal philosophy can help you communicate better with others.…
