Divergent Movie
Divergent Movie

As the Divergent trilogy by bestseller author, Veronica Roth, was rising in fame, there were rumors that there would be a new movie based on this dystopian YA novel.
This much-anticipated film hit theaters on March 21 and features Shailene Woodley as Beatrice/ Tris Prior and Theo James as Four/ Tobias. These two are the main characters of the whole series, facing obstacles together, having a trait that separates themselves from the others, their divergence, and or course, the inevitable love interest.
The book was released back in 2011, when Roth started her career as a YA author. Divergent is based in future day Chicago, where at age 16, everyone gets recruited into a faction. There are 5 factions, Abnegation, the selfless; Dauntless, the brave; Erudite, the intelligent; Candor, the honest; and Amity, the peaceful. In this, Beatrice, normally from Abnegation, is determined to be divergent, as the test to know which faction one goes into, results in her hesitance to make a choice in the stimulation.
The next book in this series came out in May 2012 and left eager fans salivating for more because of the very thought-provoking cliffhanger she had included. Roth titled the second Insurgent. The conclusion to this series ended with a bang when it came out with Allegiant last year. The book resolves loose ends with healing of broken love, perseverance through trials, and the repair broken relationships. The end is pretty shocking, something most authors can’t pull off because no matter whatever anyone says there is always that small part in you that likes the cliche, romantic ending in which the girl and the boy gets together with no more hardships and live happily ever after. Roth pulls off a stunt that will leave one confused as to what has happened and the fact that she ended this bestselling series is shocking, saddening in a sense, and mostly confused.

Interpersonal conflict exits when people in “I-You” or “I-Thou” relationships have different views, interests, or goals and feel a need to resolve those differences (Wilmot & Hocker, 2006). Moreover, it is expressed disagreement, struggle, or discord, and it occurs only if disagreements are expressed overtly or covertly. According to what I have learned, conflict is a normal and unavoidable part of relationship; and depending on how people manage disagreements, conflicts can either provide continuing closeness or ruin a relationship. In my opinion, a romantic relationship between Hitch and Sara who are two main characters in the movie named “Hitch” is a good example of how conflicts can lead to a lot of problems in the relationship if people don’t handle them well.…

The importance of being Divergent is first introduced to Beatrice after she completes her Aptitude Test (which determines which faction a person should choose). Tori (the test manager) reports to her: “’My conclusion,’ she explains, ‘is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. People who get this result are…’ She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. ‘… are called … Divergent.’ She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. She walks around the side of the chair and leans in close to me. ‘Beatrice,’ she says, ‘under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important.’” The manner in which Tori says that Tris is a Divergent means that it is an extremely rare condition that changes the way people look at them, and this is meant that Tris would have to create her identity alone. Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless (selflessness and bravery respectively), it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four. After he and Tris exit the fear simulation room, he says: “’I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your…

This movie is strikingly funny and at the same time, quite disturbing. The twist is very sharp and hooks people watching it. The character of Sheriff Marge is no doubt the most attractive point in the film. Her character is self-possessed, and generally content and easily pleased although she has seen the worst of human nature. She's married to Norm, a normal guy who cooks breakfast, and fishes, and paints birds (his work becomes featured on the U.S. $.03 cent stamp). The characters of Marge and Lundegaard are quite the opposites. Their separate scenes together embody hinge parts of the movie. She represents moral strength, and courage, and she is satisfied with her normal life. Lundegaard, on the other hand, plays a weak, afraid, and envious of the wealth and achievements of other people. He show that little crimes, such as lying to sell extras on cars, can lead to bigger crimes, such as the kidnapping of his wife to gain the ransom money from his father-in-law. His incompetence and weakness has led to the death of seven people, and has brought himself to jail. There are lots of scenes that show the difference between these two strong characters in the movie. One scene that particularly strikes me was the scene at the latter part of the movie where Marge praised and acknowledges her husband’s accomplishments even if it’s not that big. That just shows that Marge is not really after the money but just the effort and simplicity of their lives. This contradicts the scene where Lundeggard keeps on pursuing his costumers to pay additional expenses in their cars that are actually unnecessary and just offered because it will be a cut off for him. This scene would really show what such a rascal Lundeggard is and how unreasonable he can be. The opening of the movie is where Lundegaard towing the tan Sierra from his own lot across the state line to the kidnappers conveys the tacky nature of the crime, a very interesting start that will make the viewers…

In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, the reader enters a world where sixteen year olds must choose the faction they will remain in for the entirety of their lives. Each faction holds its own set of morals and values, as well as has a specific job in order to fulfill its role in society. The story is from Tris Prior’s point of view, so the reader is thrown directly into her world in order to experience firsthand what it is like to have to leave your family and deal with something completely new and potentially dangerous. As the reader continues through the story, he or she sees how certain symbols are a sign of sadness from moving on, but also that the initiates cannot be defined by just one thing, which makes them Divergent, as well as the great loss…

Being Divergent is a fatal existence that a person is born with but doesn’t know until they are sixteen and take an aptitude test and have a result for two factions instead of one that decides their future. As for Tris, her Divergence is special because she received an aptitude for three factions, making her a target for the Erudite faction leader Jeanine Mathews to formulate the right serum, “I have determined that you are one of the strongest Divergent… If I am to develop a simulation that [isn’t] thwarted by the Divergent mind, I must study the strongest” (Roth 328). Being Divergent is a dangerous thing to be also because it makes them have a larger orbitofrontal cortex making them risk their lives with selfless acts, “Yet she is extremely good at directing her thoughts and actions toward her goals. This explains her tendency toward harmful-but-selfless behavior and, perhaps, her ability to wriggle out of simulations” (Roth 335). These experiences that Tris went through demonstrate that being Divergent is a powerful ability, but also a dangerous one. Although being Divergent is dangerous, it can also help the person in simulations. Instead of being controlled by a simulation, people that are Divergent are able to wake up from it and change it to where they aren't affected by it, "All I know is that I'm always aware during simulations, and…
