Discrimination in the work place
Race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language, birth, nationality, and gender are examples of factors that most people make quick judgments about. Unfortunately, many of these judgments are based on biases and assumptions.

1.Problem statement

The post-apartheid Government of South Africa has made remarkable progress in consolidating the nation's peaceful transition to democracy. Nevertheless, transforming South Africa's society to remove the legacy of apartheid is a long-term process requiring the sustained commitment of the leaders and people of the nation's disparate groups. Apartheid was a political system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority 'non-white' inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and minority rule by white people was maintained.

The murder of white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche has reopened many old wounds in South Africa. As clips of his speeches were played and replayed on news channels, it was chilling to hear the fantasy world he inhabited and his vision of a racially-segregated South Africa destined to fight to its own death. This is but one many cases that demonstrated the prevalence of discrimination in South Africa. Racial segregation is but one of the forms of many discriminations.

2.Objectives

The objective of this study is demonstrate the prevalence of discrimination in the work place post 1994. The study will identify the most common form of discrimination, the most affected population group and the handling of these cases in the work place.

3.Literature study

Discrimination refers to any instance of treating someone in a less favourable manner on the basis of that person's characteristics.

George and Jones (2006:114) identify the following sources of discrimination: •Age,

Sexual orientation,
Socio-economic background,
Capabilities/Diabilities,
Education,
Experience,
Physical appearance and Other Characteristics

Robert Kreitner and Angelo Kinicki (2008:39) states that discrimination occurs when employment is decisions about an individual are due to reasons not associated with performance or are related to the job. Race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth are examples of factors that most people use to make quick judgments about individuals. Unfortunately, many of these judgments are based on biases, assumptions and unproven perceptions.
