Topic:

Whether or not schools should have the right to discipline students who bully others off of school property.

Thesis:

Disciplinary actions are enforced in school for purposes that ensure the students’ safety and maintain balance for all school compliances. Schools do not have the right to discipline the student that bullies another student, if the event occurs off the school property. Those that work in the school system, are the mentors to the student for knowledge and future success, and do not have the right to act as the parent figure, in terms of disciplining and involvement in privacy of the student.

Claim 1-Logos:
What the students’ actions are, such as bullying, off from school property is not in the schools’ jurisdiction to dictate upon.

Support for Claim 1:

The school system is made up of rules and regulations, which, enforced for the student to comply within the schools’ limit and jurisdiction. For instance, there are school zone signs in a certain mile radius of the school property that will allow a car to drive at a certain pace during the given time frame of the day within that zone area. If the person goes over the allowed limit, the person will be penalized with a fine amount. In comparison, it also refers to, cases such as, disciplinary action of a student bullying another student off of school property. Studies shown, that the school does not have jurisdiction to discipline, if the students’ action does not directly or indirectly affect the schools’ safe learning environment of the school itself.

Claim 2-Ethos:

Teachers are to provide an educational learning experience for the student. As the parents’ role, is to care for and discipline the student because it is their child.

Support for Claim 2:

Furthermore, school is a place that consists of teachers, counselors, and principals that educate the student in different subjects of importance for greater knowledge, that will ideally benefit a students’ future success. Teachers are given a role to provide assistance in education for the student and limited authority of discipline to the student within school premises. Teachers should not have rights to access the students’ privacy in their personal life and discipline among the actions that occur off of school premises, which is considered as the parents’ role. Both roles play an important part in the students’ life, there should also be a line drawn between the two.

Opposing Viewpoint:

Although, the school system does not have the authority to discipline the student based on actions that occur off school grounds. However, the school should be allowed to take disciplinary action upon the student, based off of evidence shown, such as social media that factors into causing a problem on school premises.

How to address:

As an example, the student may be off school property, not during school hours, and not using school properties can still use social media, such as facebook or twitter, as a method of weapon to bullying another student. After the actions that have taken place before going to school, now becomes a great impact in school when the students return. Based off evidence that causes the problem during school hours, should allow the school to use the evidence when deciding disciplinary actions for the student.

    I believe the purpose of education is to teach my students and ready them for the future and whatever comes with it. In this case, students should respect one another, teach each other what’s right from wrong, and help each other in studying or focusing the main topic or discussion.…
