Dilemma of a manager
Should the manager let the teammates leave?

Mr. C (the manager) joined the ‘H’ company on Jun, 2009. ‘H’ company is a big group company in the chemical fiber industry in China. ‘H’ Company is a private family company and it has 5 factories located in different province in China. Altogether ‘H’ company has more than 5,000 employees. ‘H’ company uses the raw material cotton linter to produce cotton pulp and then sell the cotton pulp in China. Nearly 80% of the raw material cotton linter was purchased in the domestic market, round 20% cotton linter is imported from overseas. Mr. C’s job is to build a team and import the raw material for the group.

For sure, Mr. C has the cotton linter import experience before and he knows how to run the business very well. The raw material has to be imported from the main cotton growing area such as India, U.S.A, Uzbekistan (Russian speaking), Benin (French speaking) and Syria (Arabic Speaking). So Mr. C has to find the right persons who can speak Russian, French, Arabic and English, meanwhile, it’s better for them to have the international trade working experience.

You can imagine that it is really a difficult job for Mr. C to find these suitable teammates. Because ‘H’ company is a family group, the boss does not want to pay too much for the basic salary per month for these import stuff, he promise to give high percentage commission based on the import quantity (it is reasonable payment method in this industry). Now Mr. C has to give a big picture to the teammates that they will import a lot of quantity raw material from worldwide and they will get very well payment if they join the company.

After 3months, Mr. C ‘s team building was completed, he got 2 Russian speaking teammates, 2 French speaking, 2 English speaking and 1 Arabic speaking teammates. After 2 weeks education about the products and business, the import work started to run. From Oct. 2009 till Jun, 2010, it is a good opportunity for the cotton linter

The Chinese department store’s order would require significant communication with the UK based research and development centre which would take time to develop new ideas for products and cost money as well. The factory is also running at high levels of capacity with capacity utilisation of 95% which is 30% more than the UK factory. Since the factory is running at a higher capacity utilisation level it means that the number of defective products has raised as well as the care for quality has decreased and volume has increased. Andrew is worried this might not give the good impression that is needed from the company as they are trying to sell high quality British products. The amounts of defective products in the Chinese factory are 7.5% and the total output is 10 million units this means that 750K of the produced units is defected. This would put great pressure onto the company in order to reduce the amount of defective products so that they can provide the high quality products to this large department store. If the product has poor quality people will complain to the Chinese department store and in turn this will lead back to Burkinshaw which will ultimately lead less revenue.…
