When Ella couldn’t afford to put Richard and his brother in foster care due to financial problems, she decided to move away to Jackson, Mississippi to stay with her mom, Richard’s grandmother. In the house, there was a schoolteacher who her names happens to be Ella as well who pays rent to live there. One afternoon in the front porch, Richard is curious enough to ask her what she was reading and why she likes to read books. Ella explains herself as to why she loves to read and told Richard that it is not for him to read because his grandmother would not like that, but Richard denies it and convinced Ella to read him her book
