My Mother's Unbalanced Relationships With His Father' By Richard Rodriguez
In the passage by Richard Rodriguez, he describes family Christmases past and present and the difference between the two. But even though it isn’t the main focus of the piece, a personal detail shines through; Rodriguez’s unbalanced relationships with his parents. After reading the passage it is evident that his mother is far more important to him and has had a much larger impact on his life than his father. The heart of the passage is made clear by the very first sentence. Rodriguez begins, “My mother is not surprised that her children are well-off” (line 1). The subject of the first sentence can be very telling as to the subject of the entire piece, and that is the case here. In fact, the entire first paragraph is totally centered on his mother -- her children, her predictions, how she thinks she’ll look when she’s old. All of that with absolutely no mention of his father. For most couples topics like pride on children’s accomplishments and plans for the future are something they share -- in an optimal situation both parents are proud of their children and their future plans include each other. However, Rodriguez only mentions his mother -- blatantly excluding his father …show more content…
He writes, “ ‘Don’t come out, it’s too cold,’ somebody shouts at her or my father, who steps out onto the porch” (line 27-28). This is the first time he brings up his father, yet it has a very casual tone; the point of the sentence is not to introduce his father. It’s odd because this piece is so concentrated on family -- Rodriguez starts by singing his sisters praise describing their careers, he then talks about his mother for the next two paragraphs, even mentioning his nieces or nephews before bringing up his father. So why ignore one family member while alluding to the others so often? Such a level of neglect is definitely

Within the first two sentences, the reader understands this family’s gentle disposition when the narrator hits his thumb with a hammer and supposes his father’s response. The narrator hurts himself with a hammer that has been passed down through his family for three generations. Through out the essay, words and actions from different generations of the family encompass a tender sarcasm, a light humor, and an understanding nature that renders a unique patience which is passed down from generation to generation, just like the hammer. This disposition was applied to being resourceful when the narrator’s grandfather married. Even though the grandfather “had not quite finished the house” by the day of the wedding, he “took his wife home and put her to work”. Before sunset, the house was finished. Though the narrator obviously was not present for the day of his grandparents’ wedding, from his point of view, he sees his grandfather dedicated to the endeavor of building a house for his future family. The narrator emulates the same behaviors…

There are three leading male characters in the play; Eddie, Rodolfo and Marco, and each of them play different roles and have different types of roles. The first of these men we meet is Eddie. The first impression of any character is very important, and the first impression we get of Eddie is that he is a real family person. He talks very complimentarily towards Catherine, “Beautiful! Turn, around, lemme see in the back. Oh if your mother was alive to see you now! She wouldn’t believe it.” This gives the reader the impression that he is a family person, who is close to his niece. Then when he hears that Beatrice (his wife) is cousins have arrived he tells her “Don’t worry about it B., there’s nothin’ to it. Couple of hours and they’ll be here.” This gives us the impression that he is also very caring towards B’s family, even though they come in illegally. This also enhances the impression that he is a family man. We are made to believe generally that he’s a good man, who values his family very…

Rodriguez faces a few tensions in his personal experience such as being a "scholarship boy" as oppose to a well rounded student and and his life at home compared to a more friendly home environment. Rodriguez says that "I was a very good student, I was a also a very bad student. I was a scholarship boy, a certain kind of scholarship boy. Always successful, I was always unconfident. Exhilarated by my progress. Sad. I became the prized student - anxious and eager to learn. Too eager, too anxious - an imitative and unoriginal pupil." ( Rodrigues #283 ) Rodriguez describes himself here as imitating his teachers too much and being a perfect student instead of thinking for himself and taking in the knowledge he is given by his teachers and analyzing it and putting it to use. He is unoriginal and and uninteresting compared to a student who can use their knowledge in their own way and gets more involved. The other tension Rodriguez faces his the tension he has with his family, mostly his mother and father. At home his mother and father both support and encourage what he is doing very much but they didn't like the fact that he would always be in his room and the fact that the only thing he was involved with was school. "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education." (Rodriguez #286) This quote shows that Rodriguez's amount of knowledge of the english language and other subjects he had compared to his parents and therefore he was somewhat embarrassed by them and it created a tough home environment to live in because he didn't communicate much with his parents. This contrasts the home environment where their is a strong relationship between the family and their is communication.…

Faulkner says in his speech that “It is his [the writer's] privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of the past.” (Faulkner) Faulkner means that a writer’s duty is to write with empathy or compassion because writers have the ability to connect with the audience and lift their spirits and motivate them. Rodriguez writes, “A family member would say something to me and I would feel myself specially recognized. My parents would say something to me and I would feel embarrassed by the sounds of their words.” (Rodriguez 14) In this quote he addresses how he felt embarrassed by his parents. This shows how passionate he felt this point in his life and how he refuses to let these things go unknown. Like Faulkner mentions, passionate writings have prevailed through time and Rodriguez is succeeding in doing so. Because Rodriguez is able to appeal to his audience emotions and make the audience feel sympathy for him as well as make them feel more connected to the story.Rodriguez, by writing about an emotional time in his life, allows him to not only have a positive response from the audience but proves that he can accomplish another one of Faulkner’s duty of being a good writer.…
