Depression In South Australian Teenagers
Approximately one in eight Australian teenagers between 15 and 24 years of age are reported to experience depression (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2015). This is an illness that significantly impacts many South Australian families. There are fortunately many treatment options effective in easing some symptoms that can often interrupt daily functioning. Exercise could be an important aspect of these treatments that is often overlooked, yet has many constructive mental and physical benefits. These benefits are caused by chemicals released during exercise, the friendships formed, and the control and motivation to succeed felt by participants.

The main benefits of these neurotransmitters result from the increase of serotonin and endorphins in the brain (Black Dog Institute, 2012). Serotonin is involved in many processes of relaying messages in the brain and there is growing evidence that if these serotonin pathways are disrupted, it can lead to development of depression (Green, 2014). Endorphins are involved in improving mood by blocking messages that relay pain, which therefore boosts mood (Scheve, 2009). Another benefit of exercise on the brain is that it redirects negative thoughts. Fixating on negative thoughts erodes the beneficial chemicals found in the limbic system in the brain. As the limbic system controls mood and emotion, worrying over negative emotions can be damaging to it (Howie, 2016). Teenagers with depression experience a general lowered mood. There are however, various factors that cause depression and varying symptoms, which uniquely impact the individual. A combination of medical and psychological treatments can be used to alleviate these symptoms. Physical activity is shown to have significant benefits on physical and mental health. It provides an immediate increase in mood directly after playing sport as a result of endorphins (a natural painkiller being released). Regular participation in exercise improves long-term mental health due to the release of serotonin in the brain and the redirection of negative thoughts, which relieves stress on the limbic system. Participation in exercise is encouraging due to the friendships that are developed and the valuable support system these provide. Regular exercise increases positive reinforcement formed through motivation and a sense of control over improvement and accomplishment of goals. These aspects of exercise can be used to a patient’s advantage when treating depression and can be integrated into positive healthy lifestyle, along with other treatments. It is important to remember to not exercise at a level that exceeds the skill and commitment level of the individual, otherwise negative outcomes might be observed.     Depression is the most common mental disorder, not only for adults, but for children and teenagers as well. The DSM-IV classifies depression as a mood disorder. It states that an individual has suffered a “major depressive episode” if certain symptoms persist for at least two weeks, including a loss of enjoyment in previously pleasurable activities, a sad or irritable mood, a significant change in weight or appetite, problems sleeping or concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness.     Many individuals who suffer from depression, seem to think they are helpless. For example, a student takes an exam and does not pass it. They then think because they failed they are stupid. By thinking this way, whenever this student takes another exam and fails it, they will keep thinking they are useless and give up; no longer try. Those who have high- stress are more likely to also develop helplessness. Males and females who are overweight or obese, tend to lack physical activity.
